I'm not saying you should run around with billions of tiny machines coursing through you ala Deus Ex. That would be slightly silly until the technology was advanced enough to counter any potential unexpected problems that will crop up.
The "Grey Poo" scenario?

I, for one, would welcome the opportunity to be exiled to a moon colony due to nanobots. (Ben Bova reference for those unaware)

But development of the 3d printer will probably be how it will change, nanobots while it seems nice probably wont happen. Nanobots is something an individual could potentially use. A large machine on the other hand would be something the industry would want to develop as it could sell to other industries. There is also going to be a lot of fear involving something that humans cannot see, so I don't see nanobots becoming a thing.
The joy of nanobots is the options for physical refineries, and not heat/chemical based.  Imagine you have a bag full of coins, some are bronze and some are pure gold.  Your job is to sort them into bronze stacks and gold stacks.

Now imagine you're a nanobot, and you've got a handful of sand.  Your job is to push the silicone particles to the left, and the dirt junk to the right.

Yep. Run toward them with a flamethrower away.

I had another go with the whole cooking unspoiled meat resulting in rotten cooked meat thing, but this time making absolutely sure there was no nearby rotten meat that I might be using unknowingly - cooked it with only the meat and some fire materials in my inventory and nothing else within 10 tiles.  Same result: if I have e.g. 4 chunks of meat (not rotten) all from the same corpse, I cook one and get 1 cooked meat (rotten) while the remaining chunks of meat are still unspoiled.

Near as I can tell it's linked to ambient temperature's interaction with spoilage rates - this only started happening on this character when I hit summer with temperatures of 37-39C, and it went back to normal once I got into autumn/winter and temperatures dropping back down to under 20C.

Speaking of, is there a way to actively control temperature anywhere?  I know labs get cold and ignore the seasons, but could I build my own cold cellar?

ah yes, simple, dig to around layer 6, and dig to the nearest cold lab((preferably cleared)) and then wait a while, then seal, then you will have a cold room! ((like, hellishly cold__

Yeah, the last lab I raided, I couldn't stay there.  Even with full winter gear and thermal regulators and electric underwear, I was just able to make a quick run for the finale, and then still had frostbite.  On the plus side, absolutely nothing will rot down there!  Great storage location...

Actually, wasn't it the opposite for some reason, if its too cold it will reverse rotting? You should go dwarf fortress style and make a single set of stairs down so you don't need to spend time down there.

Yeah, I realized later I could have gotten a pickaxe and just made my own tunnel.  Done right I could even keep it warmer using enclosed vehicle bases.  Have those been tweaked, by the way?  Do vehicle interiors still try to get to comfortable temperature passively?

They do, and IIRC it requires battery power.

Well...failed to make an item, it says I didn't waste any materials...however I cannot retry crafting it because 2 items are now gone. :(
Pretty much if you go select an item to use and it fails then it still takes the materials selected.
read wrong :(

Next time I make a char I'll put extra points into int instead of the others since its kind of annoying trying to do crafting with 8...but oh well, it does make it a challenge.

Should just be able to construct a vehicle with whatever dimensions you'd like, as long as you ensure it's at least 3 wide at the narrowest point.
