Suggestion: Able to take more than 12 points of penalty traits, but the excess doesn't give you character points.

If it says by how much you are going over, I'd be fine with it. Otherwise I might forget and make way more penalty traits than needed.

Ideally it's show like
!!! 14/12 !!!
so it shows the amount and alerts you that it's an issue.

If you're just dying to do that it can be done now, with a bit of kluge, by increasing the total allowable negatives in the Options screen.  Then you can take more negatives but just not use all the points, sticking to whatever positive number you want.   It'll warn you of unused points but you can still create the character, but it can't be saved as a template.

You can increase that in the options menu.
So far I'm having a successful run with a char with no negetive traits, light step, scout and night vision, then having mechanic as the background. Found a .40 pistol that can do 80 or so damage to a target next to me. Ended up catching a flu the first hour of the game and had to struggle by scavaging food and water several times while very hungry, very thirsty and dead tired because the character thew up.

I see a horde closing in on my farm. I set up a fire trap(big pile of wood across the road). By the time I'm done placing it, I find that the horde has turned the opposite direction.

Eh... grey goo is none functional. It can't make its own fuel without breaking the laws of thermodynamics, and it can;t regulate its own environment before the waste heat discombobulates itself.
That's assuming it's a 'vacuum universe' but it's not.  Grey goo totally works on Earth.  All you need is for the upper level of the goo to be solar powered.  Now the incoming energy is from the sun, which is the exact place that all biological energy on earth comes from anyways.
I never read about solar powered grey goo. Article?

The boats and z-level mods might be the things that will persuade me to start a new game...

No article, just... scifi.  Why WOULDN'T a grey goo be solar powered?

How would it? Because one possible answer is 'there is no way to provide enough power that way'.

A modern solar panel might be able to get ~200W per square meter (1,300W power from the sun, ~20% efficiency, smudge a bit for for temperature and weather).  My town, ~90,000 people, lists two dams at 45 and 40 megawatts.  That's 85,000,000 watts, or 425,000 square meters of solar (85,000,000 / 200 = 425,000).  That's about 0.0001640934 square miles, or 508.2958 square yards - 5 football fields end to end, then extended into a square.

Even if you halve the efficiency to 10%, and assume that my town gets half its power from other sources, you still get only about a half a square mile.

Central Park in NYC is 2.5 by 0.5 miles (which at 20% efficiency would be 647MW power).

If you can produce sheets of solid solar panels, you get a LOT of energy.  The reason humans don't do so now is because of production requirements (silicon is expensive) and oil lobbyist (energy is expensive, and they want to keep it that way).  Neither of these issues really applies to a grey good, especially if you're dealing with nanobots who can construct solar panels on the small scale.  If you're dealing with more The Matrix type self-replicating machines, well, they've still got a hearty edge on humans and could piece together solar power plants relatively easily.

And keep in mind, you can put solar panels over everything else.  This isn't wasted space, this is just wasted upper edge.  You can easily put solar panels atop structures that the grey goo would be using, just by building towers.

(silicon is expensive)
What?! Silicon isn't expensive as its 28% of the earth's crust. Printing on it is the expensive part, but that is only if your trying to print the very fine quality that computers normally try to do. Well, I'm a derp and at least looked into it before posting, electronic grade silicon requires a very high purity(99.9%), solar grade silicon needs an even higher purity(99.9999999%). To be honest I'm surprised that is the case. At the same time it does make sense as the process involving printing circuitry onto it is chemical based. But development of the 3d printer will probably be how it will change, nanobots while it seems nice probably wont happen. Nanobots is something an individual could potentially use. A large machine on the other hand would be something the industry would want to develop as it could sell to other industries. There is also going to be a lot of fear involving something that humans cannot see, so I don't see nanobots becoming a thing.

As for in game, artifacts are !FUN! to test.

Nanobots have too many potential medical applications for people to ignore development in that area. Something you can't see becomes a lot less frightening when its removing cancerous growths, cleaning your arteries, and the other million things they could do so you don't die.

nanobots will be hella susceptible to radiation no matter what you do though

get a dozen rads instead of nanobots cleaning your arteries they're the ones you're gonna need to get out of your arteries

*shrugs* So stick someone inside a spacesuit that injects the nanobots, then have them completely shut down when done and get naturally flushed out by your waste elimination systems. Or build a completely sealed lead lined room in hospitals where nnano procedures take place.

I'm not saying you should run around with billions of tiny machines coursing through you ala Deus Ex. That would be slightly silly until the technology was advanced enough to counter any potential unexpected problems that will crop up.
