Ok, just redownloaded the win version, still no option line for the new spawning, only the comment:

"# Spawn zombies at game start instead of during the game.  You must create a new world after changing"

and no option underneath.

Still, amazing Cataclysm progress with every release!

Can't say I'm a fan of the static spawns.  Being run down by a hulk before I can enter a single building 2 characters in a row doesn't seem fair in the least.  Static spawns while a great idea, seem to just create a very high chance of "Your character is fucked from the start and there is nothing you can do about it" syndrome.  There's only so much you can do to a hulk with a crowbar and some rocks and even a quick character can't outrun them.

But I suppose that's why there's a way to turn it off.

Startgame is more difficult yeah, but it means you don't need to deal with twelve thousand zombies spawning in a single tile because your player farted.

Maybe I'm just having bad luck with spawn locations or something.  I'll delete the world and give it another shot I guess.

Next update will spawn you with some items, so you won't be left totally in the lurch wrt bad locations. But in general the start game is going to be harder using the new spawning system, I personally think it feels much nicer to not have an hour and a half of risk free looting.

Are we considering adding in an option to choose which items you start with, like we sort of had with the old class system?

Or maybe make the item spawns based on relevant stats and skills plus a bit of chance? (I think that would be even cooler)
First point in mechanics at start gives a toolbag and a tool, and each additional point gives a 50% chance of a tool you don't yet have.

Firearms skill obviously have a chance to start you with a gun and a bit of ammo for it.

Survival gives a chance for backpack and knife.

Melee skill gives a chance of a random weapon, with sub-melee skills making certain weapons more likely IF you get one.

Would making picking starting skills a bit more viable as a meaningful option.

If so that would be really entertaining (for me at least). I love making highly specialized characters even if they're terrible. Sure, on occasion I'll still make the well-rounded dude with the "fast" traits and call him a survivalist or something, but I also have templates for: Driver, mechanic, bow hunter, spear hunter, skinhead (only permitted to ride motorcycles, must be obsessed with guns and drugs, must be an alcoholic), junkie (must insufflate/inject every night), egg-head, sharpshooter.

Since there really doesn't seem to be any end-game, making up little scenarios for myself and tailoring a rule-bound, highly specialized character for that scenario is my favorite thing to do in this game. I'm in favor of any system that improves upon that aspect.

Could we make dogs tameable with meat? And perhaps make certain foods attract animals so we cant bait traps?

If you have a little cooking skill you can make dog food from a veggie and a meat. I think it tames them.
