I'm surprised to see that a lot of you are having problems with melee.  If anything I find it easier than usual to kill zombears in melee.  Granted a lot of small critters are hard to hit but that's what thrown rocks or for.

What kind of melee weapons are you using?  I typically avoid melee until I can find a higher end weapon like a baseball bat, machete, combat knife or axe, so if you are using weaker weapons than those that might be the problem.

Also, how long does it take to get over frostbite?  My face has been frostbitten for almost a week now.

I was using a machete, +2 to melee, and the starting Military Recruit gear. I was killed by a Z-9 after missing it for 207 times, and finally bleeding out after I had used all my bandages and rags.

Yeah my guess would be that it's something with the size-based hit chance adjustments then, since people aren't having problems hitting normal zeds or larger but are having some big ones with smaller enemies. I'll hopefully take a look at it in a bit and see if I can get a fix PR'd.

Yea that definitely seems odd.  Zombie dogs and Z-9s have a dodge of 1.  Tough zombies also have a dodge of 1, and skeletons have a dodge of 2.  If you can hit tough zombies and skellies but not zdogs and Z-9s size may be making a really big difference somewhere.

Personally I'm not having a problem at all, but I start with 2 melee skill almost always.  No point having all those points in stuff other than skills if you can't survive more than 2 hours to use them.

Anyone know how to scroll what you're wearing? It goes off the edge of my screen, and so I'm having difficulty removing the last things I put on.

EDIT: To clarify, I mean in the regular inventory screen. So that I can see what letter everything has been assigned.

I don't mean to be pushy, but does anyone have any idea how to do this? I can't really proceed on my current character until I figure out how to do it (as I'm in a situation where I can't really remove all the other things I'm wearing to allow the other stuff to scroll back onto the screen'.

And + didn't work.
You can't really "scroll" the list of stuff you wear (how much do you wear, anyways?), but if you want to bring a specific item up, you can use "+" - the clothing reordering menu - to bring it up higher so you can see it in the regular inventory.

You might be able to just use the arrow keys to move over it and scroll down followed by ENTER to manually select the item that you want.

Use either > or < while in your inventory.

Just want to second the 'throwing rocks' alternative to melee'ing, assuming you have built up Throwing.  Knives are even more excellent for throwing - just throwing simple steak knives are sufficient for me to down a Z-9 in 2-3 throws (part of that is definitely my high Throwing skill leading to frequent headshots).  I end up with too much encumbrance to melee reliably, and there does not seem to be any penalty for throwing or shooting arrows at point blank range.

I'll need to try knives. I just use rocks since they are so plentiful and I am completely comfortable leaving them behind if things get too hot. Any knife works well? I just kinda assumed I'd need to use throwing knives.

And high throwing skill comes very easily. I never start with (any) skills, yet my throwing is at 9 after 3 days (2 after the first day, 7 after the second, and 9 at ~2pm the third day). Even with extreme rust you should have no problem raising throwing.
Also, parkour and expert and fleet footed are very useful for a throwing character, as I can outrun pretty much everything (or at least make enough space to kill the fast stuff before it gets to me)

Pretty sure I get better damage out of my combat knives than my steak knives.  I tend to start throwing at a distance with my steak knives, and save the combat knives for close combat as the steak knives are 'expendable' (easier to replace, lots of mansions on my map) and the combat knives are just too rare to leave behind in case I need to make a break and run for it.  But where range has been equal, I'm pretty sure I've seen some quite higher values out of the combat knives.  I want to say the steak knives usually do something in the 15-20 range and the combat knives are in the 20-25 range, on non-headshots, at something like Throwing 10.

I think I discovered the combat knife's throwing value after running out of throwing rocks with a Z9* still on top of me; after 4-5 melee whiffs at the 'nearly dead' dog mauling me I got desperate enough to try throwing 'anything likely' at it and got some ridiculous head shot on the dog with the knife.  Since then, I've used it extensively and it's been a reliable killer.  I had (then lost) a dive knife but didn't get enough throws with it; rough impression was that combat knife was better though.

I-I don't have any problem hitting zombie children, and I have torso encumberance of 2 and like 4 at melee.

And I use quarterstaffs

Am I the only one who thinks throwing might need adjusting if the answer to melee being weird is almost unanimously "Throw rocks"?

Perhaps make it more reliant on strength for damage? Or make it take longer to throw something the weaker you are, because you have to wind back and prepare a throw to do any real damage?
