Distant Worlds LP: A Story Among The Stars
« on: January 01, 2013, 06:56:12 pm »

So I've recently been getting into Distant Worlds: Legends, and by god is it one of the best 4x games I have ever played.

I'm going to start an LP, so I'm wondering if anyone has anything they would like to request.

You can request characters as they spawn, and you can claim freighters, mining ships, and other private ships if you want to RP them.

INFORMATION:
Human Republic
Spiral Galaxy, 15x15 sectors, 1400 stars
Random Location
20 Empires Total
All settings normal
Colony Influence 106%

EDIT: Forgot to mention, people can come up with whatever name. It's changeable in-game.

I'd like a cruise ship that tours a black hole!

Want to Reserve: The first Alien Fleet Commander you get.
Nickname: Captain Ahab

I'd like a cruise ship that tours a black hole!
Technically... you can make a 'tourist trap' in some systems.  Build a Resort base close to a black hole or one of those blue stars... and yea...

Distant Worlds LP: A Story Among The Stars Ch. 1
« Reply #6 on: January 03, 2013, 08:20:50 pm »

Chapter 1: Resurgence

It begins on a planet. Not an incredibly large, significant planet yet, but one with some rather significant people, for reasons not known to themselves yet.

Spoiler: The Homeworld (click to show/hide)

Nurastus Major was a system in the galactic core, it's third planet populated by humans and named Haven since time immemorial. Ancient myths claim that it was named as such as it was a haven from the evil race that once enslaved the galaxy.

The Unified Human States was a Republic that ruled over Haven: after warring for some time, there managed to be some semblance of cooperation, and the humans expanded outwards.

Spoiler: Galactic Location (click to show/hide)

The private sector of the UHS rumbled along, transporting cargo across the vast distances between stars.

Per advisors' requests, 5 exploration ships and 3 naval ships were ordered to be constructed. The exploration ships would chart new star systems and find new resources, and possibly new life. The naval ships would protect the private ships.

In the nearby system of Libiya, first contact was made with alien life. Known as the Ketarovs, they were a furry ursidian species. First contact went surprisingly smooth, as apparently the Ketarovs knew of other races, from legends passed down from long ago.

Spoiler: The Ketarov Homeworld (click to show/hide)

Libiya 2, the Ketarov homeworld, was incredibly rich with two rare resources: Megallos Nut and Ilosian Jade. While not terribly important strategically, Ilosian Jade was used to make some of the finest jewelry in the galaxy. Megallos Nut was prized for its' taste, and was hard to find.

As the Ketarovs had not formed an interstellar empire of their own, the UHS decided to incorporate them as a full member world. Building a colony ship with 30 million humans, in order to better acclimate the Ketarovs to the UHS government and culture, the UHS colonized Libiya 2. The Ketarovs accepted the colony ship, and the Unified Human States expanded its' territory to encompass two seperate star systems.

PTW, you've been exclaiming Distant World's glory in the steam chat enough that I had to take a look at it, and this seems like the best way to do that. I'm enjoying it so far.

If I may request, could you reduce the image size?

PTW and seconding the image size reduction.

If you don't want to resize them yourself before uploading (or can't, if these are off X-Fire or Steam or something), you can insert the width tag into your BBCode, like so:
Code: [Select]
[img width=800]*image URL here*[/img]
Not sure what sort of "characters" this game has, can someone elaborate?

A new character system includes Leaders, Admirals, Generals, Governors, Ambassadors, Scientists and Agents, each with defined abilities and traits and opportunities to advance and grow over time
. From there page not sure what it really means and what they can do though.

The characters provide bonuses depending on their roles. For instance the faction leader gives a bonus to your whole empire ( for an exemple, in my game my leader as the trait "peace through strenght" which decrease my overall hapiness by 10%, but increase my ship construction rate and troops recruitement by 10%. he also has +2% in counter-espionnage. On the other hand a fleet admiral will have bonuses directly for the fleet he is in command, and a spy will conduct espionnage or counter-espionnage. I just picked the game up so I don't really know much more, but I think the bonuses which are not related to trait ( the +2% counter espionnage of my leader ) increase over time.

Well, in that case, could I become the governor of a colony once you get the special characters?

If I could try to clarify...
Characters are basically important people that can be assigned to certain places, to give bonuses or negative effects, depending on their traits and talents.

Another detail on leaders specifically:

It's an astonishingly fun game.  I was extremely leery of throwing so much money at it at first, given Matrix Games' pricing policies, but I picked it up for the end-of-year sale and have been rather enjoying it.  Mind you, I'm not particularly good at it yet, but I enjoy it. ^_^
