I was thinking the ocean but that's close enough for me to count.  I should probably add more details to the riddles I make up in the future so there aren't multiple acceptable answers.

Traffic. The green sand is the glass in the stoplights. The lightning is electricity. The madness is common roadrage. The math is the logistic circuit inside the trafficvlight.

Because I realized what it was and it was clever. Green sand is the silicon circuits on the green boards, lightning is electricity, and madness and math just go hand in hand with Dwarf Fortress.

Now I have to think of one...

For a second I thought it was fear because of the metaphor smelling fear but that doesn't really fit.
