I think we can all agree that this is not the place to discuss the Maginot Line, interesting as it may be.

Sorry, but cost-effectiveness is only another story if you live in an alternate reality where infinitely many people have infinite resources and infinite time. You've slyly admitted the boondoggly nature of that which may not be spoken. Good strategy is based on producing the most effect from given limited resources of men and materiel. That's a general truth that is not related to any one particular era, so pardonable to state.

Indeed, the pinnacle of effectiveness would been covering the town of Mulhouse with a concrete dome half a km thick, bristling with cannons and whirring chainsaw blades. It wouldn't have protected Metz or any other important city, but by god, it would have protected Mulhouse exactly as planned, and cost-effectiveness be damned!

I can't believe I'm being sucked into this.

He was saying it was successful, even if it wasn't cost-effective. The two are unrelated, save by their shared though inverse effect on efficiency.

{{if were talking about the Maginot line/trench idea drop it we don't have time nor is it the right time to talk about trenches. Gentleman we have  daring raids coming at us and who knows what kind of epic proportion battles next in the near future. In other word STAY ON TOPIC. I don't want this thread locked for that it should be locked for how awesome this story is or how great a storyteller mal can be. No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

All right all right, I'll put in something on topic. I generally agree with the plan as is, though I'm also going to caution that we do need to be careful in not provoking a larger response then we intend, since we're just here to harass, not draw them out of place early

As agreed by everyone unless it's the very last moments and we have the time to do one SUPER raid on them before the big meetup with the Duke we'll try not provoke them so much. BTW i think it was established from me and Gerv that it won't happen. Anywhoooo TO WAR!

If 50 men cause a whole army to follow them, then it must be done if only to boast about it later. The horde following us west doesn't harm the Duke, and aids the King in crossing the river.

Sadly, it would never actually happen, but we can dream about it. If half their force followed us, that's half the force that is not present to fight the Duke and King. We probably wouldn't be able to double back with such a quantity following us, but already the contribution to other battles would have been immeasurably out of proportion with our forces. Never could happen. Lay into them like no tomorrow. We're a mosquito in need of biting hard, not worrying about our "strength"

Patience paddlewons if the ENTIRE horde comes looking for us {or a significant amount with the intent to kill us} then being cornered we will become...being dead is not good for health even in these good old days of the medieval time i hear.

or running into their own ambushes let's make them hurt not feel desperate. desperate men are just much more dangerous.

How are we to run into ambushes when we're ahead of them and moving quickly and unpredictably? Ye olde teleportation scrolls? If we're moving, we've got a scout on point and others on the flanks. Besides, once we're on the road west, there's no resistance out there that would have required other than the bare minimum soldiers needed to bully or exterminate the villagers being "foraged" from.

This is a trivial conversation, though, because we can't actually make 15 thousand men desperate with 50 men.
