Why kill her? She didn't really gain all that much power from the deal (and it was an arranged marriage, so she probably won't be too vengeful for Owen's death.) Plus, if anything should (god forbid) happen to Arthur, we might just need to garner favor with a new countess. It's Owen who has a problem with us, so it's Owen that we have a problem with. Foles's daughter is merely a victim of circumstance. What do I think we should do with her? Make her publicly pledge allegiance to Arthur. If she does, then she will be an oathbreaker if she tries to gain power (people wouldn't like that). If she doesn't, we hang her for treason, and we know that she actually did have a hand in it all. Either way, she can't exactly try to fight back, especially if Arthur decides that he wants to keep his sister as an adviser to stand beside him (at least until he weds.) Then, we can easily keep an eye on her.

Because we need to ensure that nothing will come back and bite us in the ass.  No assassins, not revolutions, no wars for the throne.  To do that we need to take care of loose ends, namely kill Owen and his family.  We wont need to garner favour with her if she's dead, after all.

Uriel considers her a shrew by nature. Half the town believes her the real culprit due to our rumours. She is not a blank slate like the young Count, she owes nothing to us. That she bears no vendetta is doubtful considering merely the personal shame and degradation that this ordeal has inflicted upon her, and we were clearly one of four agents directly involved, even if she doesn't ascertain the exact nature of our central role. And why do we need to garner favour with her if Arthur dies? The goodwill of the dead is worth nothing. If Arthur dies and she's already dead, that whole family line goes extinct and we'd be one of many nobles in contention. In such a scenario, I like our chances.

The question is increasingly... why not kill her?

This is true. Alright, you've convinced me! Proceed with the execution. However, I still hold that we (and by that I mean Arthur) grant forgiveness to some, to show that he is a just and merciful ruler. PR and all that.

Yeah, keep the troops in order, but demolish Owen & co.

You sink to the back of the scene, meeting with Arthur and Lope in private most evenings, but making sure that your face is not the first thing people will recall during this time. Arthur seems to be growing into the role he has usurped, getting more comfortable with commanding and asserting his feelings on issues.

With the situation settling, you suggest that a trial be quickly convened and held for Owen, his wife, and his inner circle. Arthur agrees, as does Lope. You send a note to The Rat, asking him to "find" some witnesses to your charges, and are pleasantly surprised when several just happen to show up at the Count's court the next day. You add another mental note to send more money to the man.

The trial is public, and, frankly, humiliating for Owen. He vacillates between whimpering and begging like a pauper for his life, to ranting and denouncing the new Count Foles as a liar and a madman. It does not play well with the public. His wife is meek and quiet, seemingly in a daze at the events that are taking place. The planted witnesses paint a vivid picture of deceit and treachery on their behalf, and the crowd is booing and hissing the accused by the end. Arthur draws himself up and declares that the accused are guilty, and will be executed on the morrow.

That evening, you slip Arthur the suggestion that he grant clemency to the troops, to seem a more just ruler. He sees the wisdom in this suggestion, and thanks you for your advice. The next morning, you gather in a courtyard, and Arthur announces that the soldiers were simply following the orders of a madman, and will be spared their lives and pardoned of their crimes. The soldiers are then led away, and Owen, his wife, and a few syncophants are brought forward. A headsman's block has been prepared, and the executioner does his work quickly. In a moment, it is done with.

You have completed your task. Arthur Foles is Count, a fact that is confirmed by a formal letter from the Duke. You wonder how the Duke truly feels about all of this; really, what choice did he have but to confirm the boy?

Any final tasks in Curbiston before heading home?

We should keep the rat as a private asset, we don't want the Rat to be taking payments from less then friendly sources.

Let us set up this boy with  tutor. An unlearned bastard son of a prostitute for a boss is maybe a bad idea? We don't want a second Foles. We should suggest that he try to use his time in learning because his job ail be much harder if he doesn't. Then we take our leave.

O hell no. Seriously what?

This is the guy who is an expert at screwing people over. WE DO NOT want other people using him.

That said, pay the rat, etc. Keep him on our good side.

+1 cultivate a relationship with the boy as a mentor etc. He's young and impressionable. Let's impression. Friends....

NO! The Rat needs to be our man, Arthur has no need of him. Although, we could inform him that he is to tell us should he catch wind of any conspiracies against the county. And yes, pay him. Pay him lots.

Yeah, I like this idea. Not just so we don't have another Count Foles, but because he's going to have to deal with other nobles, and he has to understand etiquette, and be able to hold a conversation. We don't want our liege making a fool of himself, now do we?

Erm... Heheh. Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. I hope that their recent marriage has not produced children yet. Let's cross that rather dark bridge when we are forced to come to it.
Agreed.

Go find the Rat and give him money. And a hug. Plus reccomend him to Arthur.
While the Rat must be paid, a hug is a bit...inappropriate for professional relationships of any kind, let alone medieval criminal ones. And, as noted, the Rat is ours; let's not split his loyalties by giving him another meal ticket. He knows enough to destroy us if he tried, or at least to make it much easier to do so.

Agreed. (All the better if the new Count pays for it, but if not...no skin off our back. The lack of worry about the knife in our back is worth paying for the new Count's tutor. Actually, maybe we should pay for the tutor, to put our liege more in our debt...?)
