Boiling water/oil works too, you know.
I'm not saying that you should use greek fire, just something that burns. Also, siege towers can only be stopped by first soaking them in something flammable. Boiling water won't destroy the ladder, but burning stuff will. Just sayiong that we should be prepared in the future.
Moats, or even swampish ground will put as stop to that just as easily. Towers are rather useless when stuck.

Well, you have a better point than me. I guess that the smell of burnt flesh will have to come from another game then.

I believe that is indeed Standard Operating Procedure.

But can't we just march in as the escort of the rightfull heir. We're not invading, just puttin things right, after all.

Have our army hang back out of sight, while Sir Lope and a handful of our best fighters approach the gate and just order them to open it. Assuming they haven't received word of our plan, they'll have no reason not to obey the marshal's orders. Then Sir Lope can take command of the gatehouse, preferably by simply pulling rank on the guards, if not, then by force, while our army rushes through the open gate.

If you want to have an advantage during sieges, we should have guards with a means of repelling ladders or even siege towers. The answer to both: the medieval equivalent of molotov cocktails:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_fire#Grenades. Deadly effective, really terrifying, but hard to make in large quantities.
If we have Greek fire, great. If we don't, we're SOL on that.

As good a plan as any. After all, it makes us look like we fear not the rule of law for we have not crossed it. (That what we're doing is legal.)

I agree with Urist's plan. With Uriel, we can probably just ride up, Uriel tells them the Marshal has returned and we go through the gate without a challenge. Then we garrison the gatehouse well, and wheel in some provisions from the nearby taverns. The gatehouse is our ticket home in a bad scenario.

Uriel probably has his allies in the city to raise, we have ours. Let's try to do this by convincing people.

You camp for the evening, and plan on riding hard tomorrow, to arrive early in the evening. You talk with Sir Lope and explain that you'd like to leave the bulk of the army in the treeline, riding up with just a handful of men and having him order the gatehouse opened. Lope agrees that this is the best way to begin the operation.

The ride to Curbiston is uneventful. You approach an hour after the sun has set, and ride forth with ten of your best men, Lope, and Percival. Denton remains with Arthur and the rest of the troops out of sight.

Your heart is pounding in your chest as you ride up to the main gatehouse. A guard on the battlement hails your party as you approach, and you pull to a stop as Sir Lope converses with the man, explaining who he is. The man on the battlement immediately snaps a salute, and the main gate is opened for your party.

You ride in, with Lope at the head. Lope dismounts and goes inside, returning in a few minutes. He explains that the gatehouse is yours now. You breathe a sigh of relief. The city has been gained. What is your next move?

I say we send one of our team back to get the rest of the troops, then quick-march to where the 'Count' is.

Lets try to make this as bloodless as possible.

That's a direct plan, kahn. It could work well, but there is a chance that we meet stiff resistance if Owen is in the Keep with a knot of diehard supporters, and then almost the entire city will be wondering what the hell is happening over there, and unsure whether we are invaders to be resisted or not.

This is what I see... Recapping from above, we put all of our rangers and Oswald in the gatehouse. It appears that the gate guards are with us, but let's give them a lot of help to stiffen their spines. For now, our men can catch some sleep inside during the night, holding watches.

Next, somewhere in the city is an armoury for outfitting a levy much larger than just a city watch and a handful of retainers, so let's get that building under our thumb tonight, as the first thing done inside. Uriel is definitely in direct line of command above the guards and officers here. They have no reason to disobey his commands for now, at least. Our men fortify the armoury and likewise catch some sleep in watches, Finn commanding. We lords and claimant have a bit less rest, as we and a small escort including Luther and the heavy men-at-arms of Uriel must do the rounds tonight, riding about and trying to persuade the important people, such as the mayor and the guard captain first, then the officers of the levy that Uriel himself would control but need to be brought on board for certain. We tell them that we muster at first light at the arsenal and march to the Keep.

Depending on our sense of the success of this, we may have to send a message to the Rat instead to whip up a mob and march to the arsenal at first light to be equipped. I'd prefer that we tap the officers of the levy to raise trained militia to be outfitted in our name, though. Either way, no large group is getting equipped in that city but our supporters. That's my plan for this operation until something unexpected can obliterate it. It delays the action till morning and broadens the base of people that know what we are about.

Wait...wasn't the Rat planning to start riots? Uh oh...if we take Owen with minimal bloodshed, but the Rat still starts the riots...I think I've found a slight flaw in our plans. Ouch. I say that the first thing we do is send people out to openly declare throughout the city that the false Count has been removed. That should send the message to the Rat that the plans have changed. Also, we should start coming up with a good alibi for why we changed the plan last-minute, because he might just be a bit angry at us.

We told him, the game is afoot. If that means start riots to him, then he starts riots. Good thing that no one connects us to the Rat. Still, I don't see anything widespread beginning after nightfall, though. I view the night as a time to ride around, knocking on doors and recruiting support. And then catching some sleep, of course. It will be hard to start the ball rolling at night.

Perhaps we need a description of notable locations in the city. I supposed that there was a Keep which Owen would be residing in, a somewhat hardened target filled with loyalists, otherwise we should indeed just go directly to his townhouse with the forces that we have at hand tonight. If Owen is in a keep, I see nothing but grief coming from battering at its gates without the town secured first.

I also assumed there's an armoury for equipping a levied militia. Otherwise, go to the townhall and fortify it and use it as a base to muster support. If there's a bell tower at or near the townhall, let it ring loudly at dawn and throughout the muster stage. I like the idea of bells tolling wildly as we begin the march on the Keep, so even if there is an armoury at which to muster, let's hit the town square on our way to the Keep and give them a good chime.

All this supposes a hard target, of course.
