I'm not advocating attacking him. I'm advocating sending Luther over to defend Silverhills. I simply made mention of possibly retaking the guards that we would send with him (to see how well he will handle the situation without them) if and when we find a way to make peace/get rid of "Count" Owen, and it won't put our people in too much danger.
Or we keep out squire around, keep Silverhills under our quite capable thumb, DON'T 'get rid of' the new count, and DO train up a militia for the defense of silverhills.

I like javierpwn's idea.

In any way that will make it so that we no longer have to worry about him attacking/working some other mischief on our lands.
That's a fucking stupid idea.  He has a little more clout than us, mind you.

No he doesn't have more clout. His claim is not yet resolved, and he's merely moved into the keep on his own initiative. Until then he was a household knight in a far-off fief under a different Count, named Zanders. He has no local support in Curbiston. Playdoh sees this with clear eyes. You don't let your rival--a competent non-drunken one, at that--become your liege lord.

We will find a bastard and place him in the county seat. End of.

We're getting rid of the new count, who hates us. The thought that Sir Owen remains Count is, frankly, absurd if you've read the story recently. Playdoh has.

Now quit jumping down the throat of a new dude saying hello. FFS.

Again, I'm not talking about "getting rid" of the Count at this time. Disregard everything I said about the Count, it's not really all that relevant to what I was suggesting (though it certainly does need to be a priority). Regarding keeping the squire around, my question is: what's he going to accomplish at our side? He's not exactly in great need of more physical training (though he could easily train in Silverhills, so it's irrelevant), and we have yet to really see his leadership capabilities. This is a great time to see how that goes down. He'll have a much better start than we did, as well, and we managed it, so it's not like we're asking too much of him. In any case, we're going to have to appoint a leader of defense there anyway, since we need someone to be there to make on-the-spot decisions, so why not Luther? The only real concern with it is whether he's trustworthy, and we don't have any reason to suspect him in anything. You must at least trust him as much as whatever guardsman would end up taking charge, so why do we need him here with us?

I hit quote instead of edit (I left out a few words accidentally, so a sentence didn't make sense)... Disregard this!

I agree, we need to get him leading, the way that we used to trust Alan to lead our old militia. +1 to your ideas after a few months of watching us and Finn in command.

Again, I wouldn't worry too much about the count at the moment. If we can find a bastard to replace Owen, great, a count who owes us one. If not...well, no skin off my back, neh?

You do realize that this guy wants us dead, right? And has the power to do it as soon as he finds even the smallest excuse, even if he conjures up some false accusations out of nothing? We need him removed ASAP.

He flips up his visor upon approach, and introduces himself to you as Sir Owen, a household Knight of Count Zanders. He tells you that he heard tell of your rise from the ranks of the peasantry, and he explains that many noble families find your story disagreeable. He comes to challenge you and put you in your place on behalf of the nobility of the land. You ribaldly accept his challenge, remarking rudely on his bulbous nose and walrus mustache. Your men chuckle as he declares that given the nature of the challenge, you shall fight to satisfaction, as opposed to a set number of blows.

The relationship started badly and has nowhere to go but down. He hates us for being common blood, and we've already had words and blows. There's nothing salvageable here. When he has the chance as our lord, he'll settle the unfinished scores.

Wasn't that just the old one?
The new one doesn't like us, but I highly doubt that he wants to KILL us. Dishonor, probably, but death will impede attempts to dishonor us.

Not to mention us having rubbed shoulders with some of the up and ups.

A quote about Count Owen from page 194 (September, Year 5):

"At the end of the month, you receive a startling note from The Rat. The Count is dead, killed in a drunken fall from the balcony of a whorehouse. Sir Owen and his wife are taking residence in Curbiston as he writes, and he hears that Sir Owen is fishing about for a pretext to justify an assault on Feroshire, which he sees rightfully as stealing the thunder of the County seat. As of now, he has been unable to find one, but The Rat recommends preparing your defenses."

So Gerv is correct to note that there are some established ill intentions.

He doesn't just want to dishonor us, he intends to disland us. Removing us from the nobility, putting us "back in our place" as he sees it. There is NO WAY this will ever be a working relationship. He's going to have it out for us until either we're no longer lord of anything, or one of us is dead (he might have a better chance of accepting our son as nobility through Marna, not that that helps us much).

So we ARE going to have to "deal with" him eventually, one way or another. Now is the best time! He is weak, he claims the County, but he has little official power yet. He hasn't been recognized by his liege or vassals as far as we're aware. He is a landless noble, probably with little or no army of his own. If we can split the loyalties of the Curbiston military with a pretender, then we'll likely outmatch his followers, especially if we can get a couple of the other lords to recognize the bastard's claim. Best case scenario: the Duke decides to rule on the matter and sides with our bastard before any fighting even happens. This is our best chance to prevent him from being a constant thorn in our side, or worse, a real threat to our life!
