I personally favour visitor - philosopher - count, but honestly it doesn't really matter.

I can think of scenarios where the order matters.
*think*... Yes, maybe. Depend on who is this mysterious visitor (a new squire? a cousin?).

I would prefer to receive the Visitor first, He was specifically looking for us. while the others were not.

the philosopher is very interesting, depends a lot on what he has to say, philosophy can be enlightening or dangerous.
(they also have a way of going on and on and on and on forever. which is why we should greet the visitor first)

the count can wait for last, we should thank him for dealing with the wool merchant and apologise for not doing so sooner, also express your gladness to see him recovered from his physical pains. also... make sure he knows about our new familial ties with the duke.

Really, I wouldn't mind meeting the players, either, if we really had time, but a private rendition in our hall. Publicly watching our exploits would be vain. If we established a connection with them, they could be useful propagandists in the future.

And for the Count, let's give him one of the best wines that we bought from abroad for this occasion when we do meet him. Our hospitality is not to be impugned. Maybe I'm hopelessly optimistic, but perhaps he has given up his quarrel... the question is have we?

I am ready to forgive him, but not to forget. If he were to give up on our mines, we can have a peaceful -friendly is probably a bit much- relationship. I prefer not having a threat on our minds every month.

first the count wanted us dead for his greed, later he'll want us dead for the threat we make on his position.

We'll do as the duke has suggested, we'll keep enforcing our position, maybe start building up some goodwill in the larger cities.
we'll push him out the legit way, little by little if he goes docile then fine, if he starts stirring up trouble we'll just have to make sure he's run out of friends and power by then.

We'll be civil if he wants to be civil. its up to him really.

Ditto to both of these.  Let's celebrate the mummers quietly, maintain our humility as a Man of the People.  And yeah, we might as well treat the drunken, backstabbing lout as befits his station.

I vote visitor-count-philosopher.

The visitor came all this way to see us, so he deserves to be first; besides, the Count won't know and possibly won't care that we didn't see him ASAP.
The philosopher last, in case he waxes locquatiously with his sesquidepellan words and metaphysical thought processes, depriving us of the opportunity to visit with other visitors or otherwise spend our time which was spent on the philosopher.

You head to a small pavilion near the market, enjoying the hustle and bustle of it all. Taking a seat in a small wicker chair, you tell Dent that you would like to meet this young man who has traveled so far to see you. Dent agrees, and hustles off to find the man in question.

Passing the time by idly gazing out at various wares on display, you shift occasionally to accommodate your aching ribs. After around fifteen minutes, Dent appears, bows, and introduces a man by the name of Luther Logan.

The young man is extremely capably built, with thick, muscled shoulders. A scar runs across the bridge of his nose, and his right ear is half gone.
He drops to one knee, head bowed, and seems to be at a loss for words, his mouth working but nothing coming out.

What will you do?

The young man clears his throat deeply, before rising to his feet. He drops his head again as he speaks.

"My good Lord Stone, my name is Luther. Luther Logan. I have heard tell that you are in need of a squire, and I was hoping that I could be that man."

"I am indeed.  Come, sit with me."  You gesture to a nearby bench and sit.  "Tell me of yourself, Luther.  What is your past, and why have you come this far to ask me to take you on as squire?  I am certain there are many more experienced and capable knights out there who would be willing to take on a strapping young man like yourself.  Knights who are slightly less inclined to get themselves killed by doing stupid things like getting mauled by bears."  You grin.

sounds good (also... sorry about missing Him being introduced as Luther =x)

the bear thing, it was an accident really. but I can imagine that the event has made a big impression on us and its still such a fresh (ouch) memory.

Luther's eyes goggle when you invite him to sit with you. "Yes, M'Lord."

He starts in on his history. "You say that many would be willing to take me on, M'Lord, but I am... was... but a simple Smith's apprentice, born to farmers. We lived in the countryside around Torchester until the Sea Raiders struck. My mother, my father... my little sister..."

You see a tear form in the corner of his eye, but he continues. "They all perished. I was returning from Torchester after my day's work, when I came upon three of the brutes. They were languishing around our house, rummaging through our possessions... I saw red, M'Lord, and killed them all. With my bare hands."

He gestures to his scarred nose and missing ear. "I cannot say that I escaped unscathed... in many ways. With my parents dead, I was unable to continue to pay the Smith, and he cast me aside. I begged on the streets, but my size and appearance failed me there. It was then that I heard tell of a Lord, a capable fighter and kind ruler, who had risen from humble beginnings. I set my mind then to go meet you.

"When I learned on my travels that you were in search of a squire, I got the wild notion in my head that... perhaps... you would take a lowly farmer's son on as your shield bearer."

He almost immediately looks down at his feet, and his voice drops. "I don't know much of the sword, or noble customs, but I know how to carry myself in a fight, and I'll work for you harder than you could imagine, M'Lord."

okay... so I don't feel much for making this guy our squire here and now. Its a decision that shouldn't be made lightly. We should invite him to be our guest for a while at the very least though we can come to a more final decision later.

If he wants a new beginning for himself he doesnt necisarily have to become a squire? why does he want to be a squire? is there a fire burning inside?

Agreed.  Offer him a place in our household and the chance to shadow us for now, but he'll need to prove himself worthy to take the role of squire.  After all, we don't know this guy.  Apart from the security threat, we need to find out how honest and chivalrous a character he is like to be.  Use the interim time to have him train with the militia and learn a little more basic combat skill, and act as a page for us while we assess him.

But yes;

"Why a squire, Luther?  I feel for your situation, but I could well find you some land here to build a cottage on and farm, and you could earn a wage to support yourself in the meantime through militia work.  Indeed, if you proved skilled enough you could rise in those ranks and remain a soldier.  It is a position of higher status and respect than that of a squire, and frankly it pays better as well.  Why specifically a squire?"
