I did not remember the width, but I still don't think we can justify a full-fledged navy. Especially if we look at it from the king's or probably duke's perspective, which is that those ships would do much more good downstream.
if for whatever reason there is advance warning, we could bring our ships to the side of the duke. We don't necessarily need to use our own navy. it could serve as reinforcement if it ever comes to it.
Which would make everyone ask, "Why does this minor, inland noble have a full-fledged navy?" The only answers I can think they would think of aren't good for us...paranoia is about the best.

They probably don't care. The King of France didn't ask the Duke of Normandy why he raised a navy, then the Duke conquered England without asking the King for permission. Nobles generally did what they thought best, with little actual written law except "give me some taxes" and "give me some troops" and a vow not to rebel. Feudalism is decentralised, by definition--otherwise you've got a modern nation-state instead.

At any rate, let's return to the navy stuff in half a year or so, when our river is dredged and our shipwright is knocking out cogs. Then we can decide how many of those will get forecastles and aftcastles, which is the only real difference between a profitable merchant ship and a warship. And those structures can even be added on later in an emergency.

While I agree with your general point, I have to nix this. Being an involved, caring lord is a lot of what got us where we are.

I was probably a little too forceful in making that point, but we didn't train last month, and we won't be training next month either during the fair, so now's the time, if we don't want to go three solid months without training at all. One month breaks are healthy occasionally, but three month breaks?

Interestingly enough, however, I don't see our rule as particularly involved, even when looking as objectively as possible. Not really. We have an easy relaxed manner with the peasants, true, but we aren't constantly wringing our hands about their welfare. Most of our success was won by leading them in back-breaking (and apparently very low-paid) building projects and in war, not following their desires and making them feel comfortable. We're a hard taskmaster when you look back at the volume of work done the past six years, often with no obvious recompense other than "these are your feudal duties!"  :D

Our best claim to their undying affections is how we stopped the raiders cold. They'd all be raped and murdered without us, like the other thowns.

+1 to halberdiers, but if you look at the building rate for our town walls... Mal generally makes us earn what we achieve.

I added some scholarly debates to the festival plans specifically as a way to tap into the "higher education" area that certain other plans like kahn's armor factory and ballista-building appear to require. I don't anticipate rapid success there, however. Maybe we get a very late game breakthough in saltpeter? Perhaps.

Normandy...isn't that the one place that has places it can reach by ship which aren't in the kingdom?
Feudalistic systems of government might have given nobles a very long leash, but they'd likely draw the line at vessels whose only apparent purpose is to either fend off an unlikely river invasion (and it would make more sense to give them to someone closer to the sea for that--more efficient, less suspicious, less management, and makes the coast guy owe us) or (more likely in their eyes) to invade elsewhere in the kingdom.
And don't forget--just downstream is a paranoid noble who already hates us. We shouldn't be giving him more excuses for paranoia.

We also personally mediated a number of disputes and spend time amongst the commoners. And, remember, being better than average isn't a high bar...

But don't rule out major developments if we work at it. We've got decades ahead of us--one Da Vinci or Tesla under a supportive lord could do wonders.

Bear in mind that, while a medieval Tesla would make things wondrous to the medieval world, his starting line is a bit behind the real-world Tesla. Also bear in mind that I was being metaphorical.

Year 5, April

April is an unremarkable month. You put out word that you are accepting new Halberdiers into your standing forces, and receive a fair amount of interest, enough to bring your total number back up to the twenty you supported before the raids of last winter.

You speak with Irlof, and he tells you that he is receiving requests for stalls at the fair at a... fair clip. You get the feeling that people are looking for some distraction after recent events, and you don't blame them. You receive word that the Duke will be in attendance, to pay you a visit and see his new great-nephew. Word arrives that Count Foles has heard tell of your festival, and plans on attending. You are ambivalent about this, but you can't exactly stop him from showing up. Several knights have also replied that they will be in attendance, as well, including Sir Percival and the young Sir Denton.

Work continues apace on the walls and tower. Progress is a bit slow this month, as many of the laborers are distracted by all the preparations for the fair. Still, no major setbacks. This project is a major undertaking, and you imagine that it may be done sometime next year, given the current rate of completion.

You cast about for laborers to expand your docks, but at the moment, the majority of your workforce is employed on the tower and walls, and you don't want to distract from that priority. Nevertheless, you have Mr. Wood draw up some plans, for future use. You are pleased to find that the Duke's orders have allowed the shipyard to expand, and the dredging will allow them to build ships that are ocean-worthy by next spring.

You work heavily on your swordsmanship this month, focusing on fighting against the odds. You enlist Fin and Oswald, and take on groups of six opponents at once. You fight on hills. You fight in your manor, kicking chairs in the way of opponents and generally annoying your lady wife. Nevertheless, you feel as if you are a bit more comfortable fighting wildly unfair fights.

One day late in April, you find yourself deep in the woods on the north bank, practicing your swordsmanship against Fin and Oswald while ducking between trunks and whipping branches, when you hear a guttural growl. Startled, you turn to the side, to find a massive brown bear, standing on its hind legs. Your unorthodox training seems to have brought you right on top of its den: you glance behind it to see three small cubs scurrying into the brush.

Fin and Oswald throw themselves in front of you. "Run, M'Lord!" implores Fin. You are armed with nothing but a blunted sword and a small dagger, and are only clad in thick furs for training. You have but a moment to decide: what will you do?
