I'm personnaly for contacting him and trying to know him, as in what he can do for us, how much can we trust him etc... Not making any deal, just getting a feel of the guy.

I am not. first lets see what he can do for us without getting involved with him.

if he seems like an okay guy we can make that decision then. right now. getting close to a shady character is more risk than I would feel comfortable with.

"If he seems lika an okay guy", yes of course. My suggestion was to contact him (indirectly, why take the risk to meet him in person, or even let him know by any mean that we are involved?) and see if he "seems like an okay guy".

I have no idea what "okay guy" will mean, Probably if he can be trusted or not. loyalty or value in his word sort of thing.

the main point it, we dont directly get involved with him, and we tell him as little as we can. the less he knows the less he has to potentially blackmail/hurt us with.

.....yeah, that name doesn't really inspire confidence. It brings to my mind a weedy guy who would sell out his own mother for 3 copper and some pocket lint  :P

Anyways, yeah if we do contact him, we do it indirectly through 3rd and 4th parties, and make sure he doesn't know who he's really working for.

So, here's what I got:

1)Properly furnish our manor. Either commission furnishings in another town, or sponsor a joiner/woodworker by having a small workshop built for him(this is the preferred option)

2)Hire a tailor/seamstress and commission a proper wardrobe(nothing too fancy though, we are a pretty humble guy). If they do a good job, maybe set up a shop for them for the townsfolk?

3)Properly outfit our troops with brigandine, helmets, and iron shields, as well as improving the quality of weapons being produced. Have the metalworkers apprentice to the armorer and weaponsmith so they start learning how to make weapons and armor properly

4)Either expand the existing mill to add flour grinding or build a new mill to power a grindstone. This should allow for more bread production and baked goods

5)The consensus so far is we contact this "The Rat" guy. So we have Irlof do so very indirectly though a 3rd party, and see what he can find

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Y'know we tend to amalgamate people we like into our group. This guy would be good to have on our side. Think like this, who can teach urban subterfuge to troops better than a spy? He has use after we deal with the count. That being said, we are also letting a foreign spy into our home, knowingly mind you, but still.

I say we do it, but watch our tongue, drink, and back around this guy.

Basically "okay guy", for this kind of business is

-Not trying to know who he is truly working for (that does not means without morale: in such case he should pull off while still respecting our privacy)
-Not trying to betray us
-At least a minimum competent
-Some sort of morale compass (I do not want to work with truly evil guys. He can be shady and all, but there has to be a line somewhere)

Of course very indirect contact (3rd party sounds good if Irlof can find someone).

Completely assimilating him is not for today nor tomorrow I fear.

And "The Rat" is not necessarily a full-on evil guy.

yes we can lose something from meeting the guy personally

he can take the info that we're digging into this mess to the count, that info might be worth something and it will really hurt us.
