"Good morning my lord duke. I have much news to discuss if you would permit me.

First, recently in my developing land I have begun digging downwards to obtain minerals and metals with my new mine. Recently this has proven astoundingly successful, as you may be able to see (gesturing to his brooch (broach?))...
I was in the process of reporting said mine to the kingdom but it seems word travels faster than parchment and, well, I seem to have attracted some unwanted attention. An attempt was made at my life a week ago by two men armed with daggers in my home. I killed one and incapacitated the other. After a thorough gathering of information from the fellow, he indicated that his employer was, well, the count. Please understand, my lord duke, I do not make these accusations lightly, but he said that he intended to kill me and absorb my land and in turn the mineral-rich mine. These were found on his person (hand over the coins) only adding to my suspicion. I have been readying my small village for conflict and on edge ever since with guards at my side. None of this is incriminating my liege and I do hope that this isn't the case but these clues... They do point in a specific direction. Judge this as you may, my liege..."

Pretty much what Gotdamnmiracle said, except that you should not say "I suspect the Count, here are the clues", but "the assassin designated the count. It could be someone else trying to frame the count though. I wish it's the case."

I wouldnt discuss the matter of the count with the duke just yet.

I don't know how the duke would feel about having his niece being courted by a targeted man ;)
also we don't know anything about the duke yet. maybe hes a good man, maybe not.

what we do know is that we want to court his niece.

if we can find a subtle way to do it, we could test the waters a little regarding the dukes feelings towards count Foles.

"Good morning Duke Erran, I have had the pleasure of meeting your Nephew Lord Melvin, and your fair niece Lady Marna.
I have enjoyed my time with the two of them very much... my conversations and interactions with Lady Marna especially so.

I don't think it will come as a suprise if I'd say I fancy her, and I suspect that she likes me aswell. I didn't think it propeach other much more without asking you for the priviledge of courting your Niece"

edit: So yeah... before we start laying down the conspiracy talk, lets get to know the guy a bit better... if hes okay with us courting his niece (we still need to ask Marna's mother aswell) we could tell him something along the lines of "It would please me greatly to get to know you better aswell my lord Duke"

Business and brass tax first. Then pleasure.

priorities, do we love this woman or dont we?

edit: I really dont think stiring up shit with his underling and our superior makes a good first/second impression.
we dont even know if this guy would take our side or not. for all we know he loves count Foles

edit2: Save the conspiracy talk till after we know the man better.

Business first, women later.

After all this was an attempt at our life

Although in order to prevent further attempts like this from the count we should marry Marna and sire an heir as quickly as possible.

We need to talk about the assassination first and foremost. We are NOT whining that Count "andry drunkard" Foles did it, we are saying that the little clues we have point toward him but that we are reluctant to believe it.

Although in order to prevent further attempts like this from the count we should marry Marna and sire an heir as quickly as possible.
We should avoid saying that or even thinking about it. Thinking of our loved one as a shield is not gentlemanly.

Fair enough, we are going for the whole chivalrous knight idea. I'd just like to point out Marna has more benefits than just love and depending on the Duke's fondness for her she could be a great asset in any conflict by securing the dukes support.

It's brutal and heartless, but hey, medieval politics   8)

I really think discussing the possible plot first is a very bad idea!

you just don't go share dangerous and sensitive information with people you hardly know :(
I am not opposed to talking with Duke Erran about this, but only if we find him sympathetic towards us. Someone being out to kill us is a big deal I get that. but this really is a delicate matter.

the simple fact is, We don't know this man yet.

Well if he wasn't sympathetic who would we go to then? The king? Deal with it ourselves? No. Plus if we wait on the subject then he will wonder why we didn't bring up the fact THAT SOMEBODY MADE AN ATTEMPT AN OUR LIVES AND WE THINK WE KNOW WHO IT WAS.

Plus Mal already stated he kinda likes us.

We could also say we ran it through the other lords at our level to make sure our story wasn't just madness and they agree.
