Um not saying we need to build it NOW(since we need an architect first, and this is probably a several-month's-long project), I'm just saying we need a consensus on what to build it out of when we get it started. All the other stuff I posted first is more important than getting our manor built, though it wouldn't hurt to go ahead get the site cleared at least.

That's why I voted brick walls

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

I doubt we'd get permission for stone walls, as those are actually a city only thing. Because, with our small population, building stone walls is actually similair to building our private fortress, and shows distrust in our liegelords (Not that we have any reason to trust him, but anyway...)

Stone walls as in, building walls. Those, I am quite sure, are 100% legit. After all, you'd have stone townhouses without those being considered private fortresses, and building a glorified stone fence would hardly be a problem too (someone early on mentioned you needed a permission to build crennelations on the walls, and those definitely scream 'TOTALLY A MAJOR FORTIFICATION', not the walls themselves.)

Any sort of defensive fortification was considered a privilege in medieval times. So, our town walls would fall under those, though they might be a bit to small to notice. (The Count would consider it offensive though).

Of course, building stonewalls as part of a house is a different thing altoghether.

actually we could build a minor stone fort as long as we get permission from the king. Manors were quite defendable and have walls and towers, if instead of a small one-two story wall with towers and a gate house we build a three or four story walls in layers, Huge gate house with drawbridges moats, and have catapults on the towers, we should be ok as long as we get permission.

Everything is OK with permission for the King. However, these things are not handed out for free. Charters like these are almost always bought.

I suggest we make at least the lowest levels of our house out of stone.
It shouldn't just be a manor, either. It should double as the White House/Capitol of our little barony, and perhaps also hold the treasury and other valuables. It should also be able to hold many of our peasants in times of trouble.

Plus, if we report that we've discovered the richest mine in the kingdom(which according to the GM, isn't very much of an exaggeration at all), I'm sure we'd have no problem getting permission for any sort of defensive structure we want to build!

Plus, a give of raw gold and silver nuggets/ore should convince him we're telling the truth, plus buy any charters nicely

Also if our trade keeps growing we might have to build forts regardless to protect the roads from bandits.

I'd say be careful with the publication of our mine.

The last thing we need is an invasion from a desperate/greedy/evil lord, the Count or even the King to try and take it from us.

Or have it seized to fund the war effort (if the country is at war).

Or spark a rare-metal-rush that could see many mines popping up, taking our materials and selling them off without us getting a share of the money.

Year 3, November

With a cold front moving through the area in November, you turn your attention to your next plans. You consider sending word out about your mine, but are unsure whether publicizing it at this point in time would be the best course of action. With mining slowing in the winter, your Steward believes you may have some time to consider it further before taking action.

With market activities slowing, you decide you can send Irlof to nearby towns, ostensibly to look for trading partners, but in reality to seek out architects and metal workers. He finds several unattached metalworkers (some of them mere apprentices), who he persuades join your town, but is unable to locate a trained architect who is unengaged.

You also set up some charcoal huts set up near the smelter, in preparation of the smelting activities that will take place there. You also talk to the shipwright about commissioning a ship, and he begins to draw up some plans for a vessel. He'll need money to buy the right equipment to build it, though, which you don't have at the moment.

You search around the town for a site for your next home, and locate one on a hill overlooking the docks and a few hundred yards from the town walls. You set men to start clearing brush and leveling the site, but the going is slow given the chilly weather.

With that set in motion, you spend much of your time studying the laws and appointing a magistrate, whom you choose from an informal council of elders that had been set up. The man studies the King's laws with you, and you state that you will hear grievances monthly, with the magistrate ruling in your stead on simple cases.

You also order warehouses built by the mines, but the cooling weather means that work is slow. Stumpf says that they'll put them up next spring, when the hauls start getting good, and simply store the ore in the mines until then.

Winter is coming. What will you do in December?

Well, with building nearly impossible, nothing to do but wait for spring now. Personnal matters (who said marna?) and stay assured that the peasant get through well enough.

Let's draw up plans to improve our peoples housing arrangements, and what about building something to improve hygiene. Sewers/aqueducts?

Seriously, if our people live better than us, I wouldn't be absolutely against it. Humility and all that.

....I'm not sure we have room for something like sewers(or are big enough to justify such!), though now we have plenty of brick, if people want to start living in brick houses(or brick-and-wood) we can at least insure fair rates for brick. Speaking of, pave the road from the docks to the market if we haven't already(shouldn't be too difficult of a small project for winter's time), and check in and see how our wines are going(if they are going at all!).

Then we focus on personal stuff, yeah. See if we can arrange a meeting with the duke for January, and learn more about the sword, then decide on a longarm to learn(while knights in armor wielding swords were the image of the middle ages, in reality a sword was more of a sidearm. After all, if you can use a spear/pike to keep the other guy out of reach of his own weapon, then you live to fight another day!) It'll probably be a spear, since we'll be expected to learn the lance(if only to use in jousting tourneys and the like).

Were there even sewers in medieval times.

I think a village well and such 'll be a better idea. Maybe a small water storage. (Winter might not be the time to play in water though.)
