The dice gods will probably be in our favor after how baddly earlier today went. Statistically.
*scream in horror*
Statistics don't work that way dude...

But yeah, I approve of keeping the festival, for reasons quoted above. On more serious matters, our main focus will be trade, now that merchants are gone.
And paying taxes. I hope these coins from the bandits are enough.
Also it was suggested earlier, but can we have a full-time local clerk?

well... truth be told things didn't go that badly.
we were outnumbered and green. We have driven off the brigands but lost good men in the process nothing more could be expected.

it could have gone a whole lot worse.

Lets hope that their sacrifice will mean trade will open up for their kin that is still alive and the town that they laid their lives down for will flourish because of it.
(we should also mention this at their funeral, praise their sacrifice, make them heroes)

edit: (if we manage to make them into heroes maybe other lads will step forward to join the militia)

as for the taxes... lets try to pay in crops initially if the crops (fuck the drunk swine of a baron) aren't enough we can supplement with coin. it would be nice if we could keep the coins to get a still going, the lads deserve a drink after what they went through.

Year 2, October

October starts on a somber note, with the funeral of the three dead spearmen and Tor. A local priest arrives, and you deliver a nice eulogy for the men. People are still shaken by the first conflict the area has seen in a while, but they are proud of their men. You talk up the battle, trying to make the fallen sound heroic, but are not sure if you have succeeded. You are still not a master of words yet.

Most of the month is spent finishing up the harvest. You send Irlof and Dent to town several times, exchanging pottery, furs, and a portion of the food given as taxes for hard coins. You finally have a small town treasury, which for now you simply keep in your house. As your Steward helps you understand, the money is technically all yours, but customarily the majority of it should be spent on helping the land grow stronger.

The harvest finishes, and the haul was about average. Between the communal farms, the taxes in food people pay, and the trappers, you have a medium supply of food for the winter.

Towards the middle of the month, the tax collector from the Count arrives. This time, your Steward and Irlof are around, and make sure that the tax collector is less severe in his reaping. Still, he takes a good chunk of your coins, probably about 10%, in addition to some pottery and grains.

All month, you notice more and more people streaming into your land. You are not sure whether it is because word of your banishing the brigands has spread, or what, but it is definite. Many of them settle in the city, probably due to the now expanding market, but also because there are several barrack-style buildings for new arrivals that Wood had constructed on his own initiative.

At the end of the month, you gather the people for a common-man's tournament. You set up brackets for weightlifting, throwing, wrestling, archery, and riding. The women of the land, independently, set up their own contest for the fairest maiden to be held simultaneously. It is, simply put, a smashing success. The people laugh and enjoy themselves. Many merchants stop and set up shop for the days the tournament is held. At the end, you throw a feast, and buy a keg of beer to share with the winners. All in all, it seems to have repaired any uncertainty about your leadership caused by the deaths of some of the men.

During this time, Wood begins work on a palisade, as well. He gives the town plenty of room to grow. The project will likely take a few months to complete. He spends this month digging foundations, knowing that the ground will freeze soon.

What would you like to do next month?

maybe now is the time to set off on a quest for the holy still.
we have coin to acquire one, and not much else to do?

lets bring Marge for her eye on quality and Irlof for a fair price, and Alan because the quest shall undoubtedly be full of perils.

edit: maybe we can swing by Sir Denton aswell. We'll have our first tale of battle to tell, and if Sir Persival is there I'm sure Alan wouldn't mind seeing him again.

I agree with this. Also, lets look for a saw for a mill. Again, also is the mine past the point of frozen ground yet or is it still in planning stage?

((There might be one problem with building a pallisade though. Generally, you needed to earn/pay for the right to defend your city in medieval times.))

Anway, we might want to try and get the brewery finished. Also, what kind of crop cycling system do we use. As far as I see, we have one harvest a year, rather than the 2 we can get with a winter+ summer grain system.

Explain. I've never heard about this.

I doubt it'll be relevant for a village this small (but those useally didn't have any walls) but any city/town in medieval times had an often written charter of rights and priviliges. The King, when he wanted to tax them more or do something else, would negotiate with the cities, and in exchange give them more rights. The logic against a wall being on of these is that it's a large defensive construction, and that it's kinda hard to rebel without one. Hence only the cities the King trusts (or those that have sufficient financial influence) get the right to have one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Town_privileges

It's gets quite funny, because in the lower countries any town that managed to get a set of priviliges was called a city, regardless of population. Hence the fact that there are cities with about 40 citizens, and such.

Edit: Oops, apparently the right to hold a market or even store goods is also one of these.

I agree with the Quest for the Holy Still, and possibly a priest.
We should make the festival an annual tradition. I think the economic and morale boost is worth the price.

I think we're too small and the palissade too frail to be illegal. If we wanted to put up a REAL wall, it could be worrisome.
But we started our town from scratch, and as such it has no official existence in king's records, I'm fairly certain.

I have seen this aswell in a book of mine, (though the book is in dutch) its called "kantelenvergunning" in dutch, from what I can tell you werent allowed to build crenelations ontop of your walls without it. (it could have been a silly local thing ofcourse)

I think a watermill might be a better idea that a windmill. Costs less, and is a bit more productive. (If the river doesn't freeze, that is).

Mine is still in planning stages. Needs seed money to get off of the ground. Basically, you have enough for either still or starting a mine. Saw for the mill is less expensive and could be paired with either.

But we're next to a river. Meaning we're in a valley. Hence, no wind.

We could build some levees and dikes if you want.

Water is more predictable than wind, so I support watermill, sorry. :(
And still + saw for me. Mining is slightly less important than booze.
