Trade in general... Get merchants to stop at our dock and trade. We already have some cheap things to sell, no? Start early, discuss about possible improvement with the merchants that bother to visit us, improve to increase income, repeat, profit.

Above, as well as improve the communal farm. We are a farmer by trade after all. Set up irrigation canals. Getting a shipwright would seriously help this whole trade business. Ask irlof how he came about his ship.

You could also set up a fertilizer pit, and consider, slash and burning the small bare spots between plots, pacing them out, and marking them with stone hedges, to separate families crops and give them more workable land. All considerations for future turns. I am also thinking about a fitness yard, with pull up posts, a cleared fighting pit, and sit up bars, the rest being able to be filled in with creativity, communal of course, but required for militia. I also have a great idea for a sword, when we get to that point.

For this turn I suggest those suggestions above this post.

something had dawned on me, its not of Great importance but something that should be looked into non the less.

we have a couple of poachers/hunters working our lands, and while we're completely okay with this and have even encouraged it. Other lords can be quite stern when they catch people poaching their lands, we should make sure our poachers know exactly where our lands start and end. and we should probably also give them some sort of seal... or permission document just to be safe.


so yeah? we'll be talking with stopping merchants to see what they like and don't like?
also I wan't to know what we're going to need to start up that mining operation, no doubt we'll have to get tools and set asside manpower, howmuch manpower? and what kind of startup costs are we looking at?

also lets task Irlof with tracking down an afordable still for our little brewery.

Smart move, we should also make sure furs are sold in the market, it sounds.like this land.isn't awash with.them. I think irlof should focus on setting up trade deals but inquire into the matter... maybe we should look at it from another angle. Stills aren't needed at a vineyard... We don't need to sell masterwork wines in the beginning, just table ports. I haven't heard any mention of the stuff, after all.

Sadly, you can't make grapes everywhere, and getting the plants might be hard. Good wine grapes don't grow everywhere.

Year 2, June

June is mild and beautiful. You spend your days lounging on the docks, waving down passing merchant barges and holding long, thoughtful discussions with the captains that land here. They have been taking notice of Feroshire for the last few months, and many of them are impressed. They sample your pottery, and come away impressed. You ask them what you could do to attract more trade, and they mention two things. More goods, and more stability.

Several mention those brigands that are encamped north of you, and that they are generally skeptical of putting ashore so near such unsavory characters. Otherwise, it is simply the paucity of goods you have available for trade at the moment that seems to be holding you back. However, many of the merchants do seem to enjoy your quirky little inn and its well cooked food, which is a plus. As is, several mention that they plan on stopping here in the future, which is encouraging.

You work hard on the communal farm, improving the irrigation canals and further demarcating the plots. It is now very acceptable, and seems to be attracting attention from the parcel farmers, who come to you for ideas and techniques. The fields are flourishing.

On a whim, you decide to cast about your land for some grapes, with the notion of making wine. You've only seen grapes a few times in your life, but you are shocked and pleased to find a few bushes growing naturally across the river in your land. With care and effort, you could easily set up a winery. If you knew someone who knew how to do it.

You ask Irlof about his ship, hoping to get a lead on a shipwright. Unfortunately, he didn't build his ship, but inherited it from his father. However, he tells of a great shipbuilding industry in the Duke's capital (your lord's lord, who you have not yet met). He indicates that would be a good place to look. When you ask him about a still, he notes that you already know the Abbey has them, you just don't have enough money to make them want to sell you one. He also suggests possibly looking in the towns for enough tin, brass, or copper, and someone who could work the metals.

With your increasing literacy, you realize that your lands have a definite boundary, and it may not be wise to have your trappers wandering off your land. You give them a small seal, painstakingly written in your own hand, that indicates they are allowed to take game on your land, and have your steward explain where your land ends. An intelligent move to ward off future ills.

The miner states that setting up the mine would take a good portion of the village's population at the moment, unless you hired a crew. He will continue to survey, and await further orders.

Just thought I'd clarify: this year, you'll start gaining your own personal wealth in October, when you collect taxes. Then you can start buying some stuff, if you'd like... or saving. Your call.

If we have a moment before harvest or whatever, take the militia and pay a visit to these bandits. Since they didn't attack us, I assume they are too weak to face us. If it was twenty or so seasoned bandits, they could steamroll us and they know it. So they would probably have done it by now. (I think).
Dislodge them by saying they disturb trade and should either join you as guards or get out, lest they will feel your wrath.

Probably improve your riding and sword skill before that...

Otherwise our money (dont pressure people with taxes too much... We need this money, but we need them more) should be first spent in a still.

Let's discuss a plan of attack with our squire. The Lord was right, we do need some simple infantry. We should ride to the land of sir Percival and ask one of the military captains of retired swordsman, axemen, cudgelers, or spearmen. If any we bring them back after buying some of the weapon our guy is expert in and head home, we will pump out some serious dudes after that fast and quick. Tell the people that if the join the military, their land will be worked by a neighbor, and the neighbor will receive a percent of the profit, but you will no longer have to worry about food, due to being fed by the communal plot.

lets gather information before we commit ourselves to a plan of action.
Can't argue with any of these. Here's a way to weave them together:

1. Try to gather some info on the bandits.
2. Meanwhile, locate a veteran to train our militia. Room and board should be a good payment for some; for others, throwing in some pottery or an official title would probably help. We can find something.
3. Have the veteran train the militia.
4. Finish recon.
5. Defeat/Befriend bandits.
6. Get back in time for the harvest.

It's better to have some new skilled "soldiers" then to lose some militiamen. Not likely, but it'd be nice.
