Year 5, OctoberWith news of the Count's unfortunate accident, you consider going to Curbiston to pay your respects. However, you receive a letter from The Rat saying that the situation in Curbiston is... unstable. Sir Owen has moved into the Count's manor, and there is some general unrest over the inheritance. You hear that he is referring to himself as Count Owen now, a title to which he theoretically has some claim, being married to the former Count's eldest daughter and only child.
You send The Rat a sizeable sum of gold, and an instruction to begin searching for a male bastard of the deceased Count. He sends a letter in affirmation, and says that he will begin to search post-haste. You also request that he search for dirt on the new Count Owen.
Turning your attention to defense, you approach Gunther and ask him to begin researching engines of war and teaching the principles of ballistics and range-finding to some clever townsmen. He is relatively agreeable to this, and takes to the task with a few young citizens. Construction continues apace.
With the tournament approaching, you find a talented troubadour from the previous festival to compose something from your book about local lords and their deeds in the battle. He gets to work and will debut a song at the tourney.
The martial festival arrives, and with it a large influx of young men and local Knights. The joust is small this year; Count Owen does not show up, apparently too busy with his newfound holdings, and you bow out with your injury, which is feeling a bit better after all of the rest you have given it. Sir Ivanson shows up, and mops up the few participating jousters.
You instruct your militia to recruit heavily during the fair. Oswald finds a few likely rangers, while around seven men sign up for your longbow corps. Luther crushes all competitors in the melee, cutting an easy swath through his numerous opponents. Even at the end, when three men gang up on him, he easily dispatches the foes.
You comport yourself as a generous host, making the Knights feel welcome. You feast each night of the tournament, with beef from local cattle, Feroshire wines, Abbey beer, and other dishes prepared by Ian Hermage, your skilled cook. The troubadour regales the assembled men, and you see young Sir Denton tearing up at the mention of his father's glorious passing. You feel the relationship thaw somewhat with him, although he is still a bit distant.
Marna works the room ably during this time, paying attention to Denton and Percival in particular. She is a skilled hostess, and they seem pleased with her attention.
You have one more month for activity before a long winter sets in. What shall you do, Sir Stone?
