^Could we just challenge him to a duel to settle this quarrel on the grounds that there have been enough blood shed the past year?

Let's not, since we likely have some pretty big issues with our health and possibly it's underlying physiology.

Yeah, he beat us once in a fair fight before we were injured.... That's not a ... well I wouldn't do it.

I think we're overlooking something as a form of protection as well though: the Duke. If Owen wants to play the marry into it game, then we are clearly beating him. He's got some Count's Daughter. We've got a Duke ... carry the 1 and ... I think we win.

We are married to the niece of a duke, while he has the daughter of a count.  I claim no expertise in the area but we may want to check out who could bring more weight to this.

We won the first bout, but our armour weighed on us the last two. That's before we became fine swordsman and average armour user. If not for our health, I think the rematch would have different results.

And that reminds me that Luther's training ought to be in armour, or a facsimile thereof until we cobble together some.

In that case, our squire must fight our battles. We'd best get him fitted for plate armour, and find an ad hoc suit until the properly fitted one arrives. The duke seemed to have spare suits. It's an extraordinary step to armour a mere squire in expensive plate, but if we can't do battle, we need a champion to fight our cause if Owen presses us at the contest.

Let him go wild. As much training as he craves.

I agree, our first resort should be to simply ask for a postponement, but if he truly demands satisfaction for his honor we send Luther as a champion in our place.

As a bonus this serves to teach Luther about service, and fighting to protect the honor of his liege and lands at all costs.

Uh, if we can't really hold a sword, then we've got real problems. Who knows what sorta internal injuries we might have, man.

I don't really know what kinda medical assistance we could even get anywhere and/or if it would be better advice than: "wrap your ribs and don't do anything for a while."

so it sounds like our new rival is moving in the shadows to find or fabricate a legitimate reason to move on us via violence.
I see two main problems, the first being that we don't officially know this. we know, but he doesn't know we know.
the second, If he does find a legitimate reason to move against us our allies would technically be traitors if they move against him.

I think with the loss of the elder Denton our fellow vassal alliances have grown a little shakey. Denton being the one with the most authority. and with the count being new he hasn't had a chance to show himself as evil and or incapable which probably makes our friends less eager to take a side when the stakes are high.

I think we need to try get some advice from our uncle in law (in private), find out what exactly could be 'pretext' enough to move against us and how to arm ourselves against this less direct snake. also... give our uncle a heads up about some potential violence brewing in his duchy.

Lets shift our focus completely on getting our defences in order. maybe we could think up some traps or tactics to work against heavy cavalry. We should also try to find about what kind of forces our rival can bring... and perhaps who his close friends are that might aid him.

I think finding a bastard we could potentially support is a good idea, and we should go ahead with it.

About Luther, I think we should start opening up to him. He has proven himself able with the sword and willing to learn in areas where he is less able.

what we need in our squire is a comrade, a right hand man and perhaps even a confidant. a man who has our back not because its what he is trained to do, but because he genuinely cares.

I agree we should ask him to be our champion if the gauntlet is thrown down. I doubt it is proper to have him engage in the martial games on our behalf though. I'm not sure if he should participate in the martial games at all... it would be terrible if he were to get injured before we really need him to act as a champion... hmmm...

edit: to make it clear, I strongly agree with keeping to the doctors orders and avoid fighting or other heavy physical assertions.

I'm sure it would be acceptable, it was not unusual to have someone fight for the honor of their liege. although the wisdom of allowing him to compete is questionable.

Generally it was considered improper to duel anybody of a higher or lower rank. Doubtless Owen has a squire or other form of acceptable substitute to battle Luther in his place should a duel come to pass.

Well, for starters... I know. There's only a certain amount of things with those symptoms, and they're all involving pressure on the main spinal column. You don't black out from getting jarred a little by a blow unless there's serious damage to your spine. Temporary bruising and inflammation could also do the same pressure on the nerves, but that's not the case here after six months, is it? You've got some flavour of permanent damage, such as severely herniated disc. I am not amused, Mal.

Firstly, anyone suggesting we fight personally: You are morons. Didn't you see what happened last time we tried to fight? Didn't you hear the healer's advice? If he presses you about the duel, get the medieval equivalent of a doctor's note. If that doesn't satisfy Owen, show him the remains of the bear and ask if he thinks he'd be able to fight after breaking all his ribs under that. If that doesn't work...we'll improvise.

But what should we do? Politics. I like that idea of finding a bastard of the count's, but let's make sure our first priority with that is to, as they say, not disturb too many trees. Or is it not to disturb too many birds when shaking trees? I dunno.

Um...I had other ideas, but I lost track of them during an interruption partway through that second paragraph. Gosh dang it.

It's a bear. It hurts. Go figure. Not much to be done about it now. I suppose now instead of doing things ourselves we become X the lame and have people do it for us. Meh. Either way, let's not call out the wrath of the DM. Rocks and falling from the sky and ... yeah.

To bastards! (of the count). Let's find some. I hear there's a tactical reason for this and let's do it for that reason as well.

+1 to that.
You know, this plan sounds decidedly similar as to another one I remember reading about, I wonder where that might've been...
