You are guarded, unsure how to proceed with the Count. You decided to air on the side of caution, and offer a platitude about working hard and the reward found therein.

"Yes... it seems that your hard work has paid off handsomely for you."

There is another pregnant pause. You ask him how he is recovering from his gout.

"My what? Oh. Yes. The gout. I... erhm, it flares up from time to time. I suppose."

You attempt to talk of the bear attack, but he seems to be disinterested, staring blankly towards the fair. You trail off, at a loss for words. Will you continue to sit with the Count? What shall you do now?

"Ahh... How is your daughter, my liege?  When last I saw her she was still courting.  Has she had success finding a good husband?"

I suddenly realise we have no idea if he has any other children.  o_o

"We've met.  An honourable man."  An awkward pause.  "My liege, we have been... distant... for many years.  Perhaps it is time to put that behind us?  I understand you'll be hosting a banquet sometime later this year.  I would consider it a great honour if you would grace me with an invitation.  Perhaps we could become better friends than we presently are."

Haven't the slightest idea if he is, but there's no reason not to suggest it.

Sounds good, perhaps we should challenge him to a friendly contest? There is no better way to make companions than through competition.

Eh, personally, I'm for breaking off and resuming activities at the fair, I really wouldn't let my guard down around the count.

Sod it, yeah, might as well just make our excuses and leave.  This guy's pretty hopeless after all.

Yeah lets break things off, I see no reason to give the count an opportunity to poison us.
I also see no reason to befriend him. the only thing I can think of is 'keep your enemies closer'. We will try to take over the position of count from the man at some point.
he's no good for the county and thus should be replaced.

when Sir Denton was around I felt a little awkward about ambitions to become the count, seeing as Sir Denton was a good man and probably much more qualified.

Perhaps have Denton/Percival as Count... We're aiming for Dukehood after all. :P [/notcompletelyserious]

Clear that the conversation is going nowhere, you make your excuses, saying you must go attend to your wife and son, and the Count mumbles an awkward goodbye. As you leave the pavilion, you notice that he has shifted from a bench over to the wicker chair you were sitting in, and he has poured himself another hearty glass of wine.

You still have an hour or two before the Duke has requested your presence at a raised platform near the market, which generally is used for auctions and livestock sales. Any particular plans?

Mingle with the common people. Let's put that man of the people skill to work.

alternatively we could find Marna so that we aren't exactly lying to the count (although I only mildly care about that)

we can also try to have Marna on our arm (if she isnt doing anything of interest herself) as we mingle a little before we're wanted by the duke.

Let's combine the two. We personally introduce Marna to the militia, all the people on their level (if we haven't done that already). After we officially announce our son, we do the same with him.
