Usually war was waged in spring, hence why march bear the name of the god of war. (It was "Martius" in the Julian (roman) calendar).

You tell your men to go rest, and that you will speak with them again in the morning. You invite Sirs Percival and Denton to your manor, and crack open a cask of ale that you have been saving for a worthy occasion. Wearily, you settle down, a fire crackling in your hearth, and tell your two friends what has transpired thus far.

Your friends are impressed by your mettle, and toast your victory. However, they are troubled that the Count let these raiders through his land... although not surprised. Sir Denton does posit, however, that given the timing of the battle, they may have slipped by Curbiston in the night, choosing to avoid such a strongly fortified position. Sir Percival nods, and says that may in fact be a possibility.

When you ask if there are any other nearby Knights they can call upon, they shake their heads. They do recommend getting in contact with Carshire, however, as they generally can provide a sizeable levy of spearmen in a pinch. They also recommend that one of them rides to Curbiston on the morrow, in force, so that they can ascertain what is happening with the Count.

They also express some reservation, saying that the weather will soon become inhospitable for campaigning. An army could only survive in the field for another month or two before the bitter cold of winter began to take a toll.

With that, you retire for the night, saying a prayer for those who fell and one of hope for your wife and unborn child's safety.

***

In the morning, you hold a service of mourning, naming all of the dead amongst your soldiers. You also commend the wounded, and explain that your Steward is commissioning medals to provide to them, that will show that they carry your thanks and favor.

You give a rousing speech, claiming that you have smashed their first advance up the river, and you will smash their next advance, and any more that come thereafter. This is your land, and you you'll make sure that anyone who encroaches on it dies learning that lesson. Your people are heartened, although their mood is still stoic.

Sir Percival rides with a small guard to Curbiston, and you spend the next two days preparing a false townfront downriver for defending the river. With fake buildings, fences, and other pieces of cover for archers. A rider also arrives from Carshire, telling you that they have called up their spearmen, but that they cannot leave their walls undefended and join you at the moment.

Later that week, a small courier boat arrives from Curbiston, bearing Sir Lope. He tells you that he comes on behalf of the Count, to call your levies up. He explains that the Count is battling a fierce episode of gout at the moment, but that he has sent Sir Lope to gather forces to join up with the King in relief of the Duke. You are to bring as many men as you can spare to Curbiston, in order to quickly march on the enemy host.

The month is waning, and it will soon be October and the harvest month. Your harvest is already being pulled in, but there are no extra men to work on your tower and wall at the moment. Will you leave? Do you have any orders for October before you travel off? What comes next for the battle-hardened Sir Samuel Stone?

didn't we send all the women and children to the abbey, guys, why are they wailing at our ROUSING SPEECH TIME, this is silly

We can just take our time and raid the Curbiston armory if/when we manage to get the raiders to mess with it. :3 Or were these the raiders? That is a mystery.

Well, now we know why the count's been silent, and being ill IS a legitimate excuse. So, we inform our friends that we are to make haste to Curbiston and join up with the Count. Resupply all the arrows we've expended, and as said see how much armor we can make in a few days. Also, inform Carshire of the news that the count is requesting everyone meet him in his city, so they can send as much of their levy as possible without leaving themselves undefended.

Quick qestion mal: Who does Carshire look to as lord?

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

What should we do with the harvest festival? Delay it, hold it on time, cancel it?

Cancel it a hold a winter festival, y'know, in celebration of our driving off and slaughter of the nameless raiders.

Oh, ok then, I'm guessing we don't need to send a message to Carshire since I'm pretty sure those levies belong to him in that case, and are already on the move :P

Anywho, keep working on fortifying the river for when we're gone(I'm STILL insisting on SOME sort of navy to help in this), and have the men drill as much as possible while the harvest gets in. As soon as we have the harvest in, we and our fellow knights will depart for Curbiston to meet up with the count's forces. Hopefully the King will be here soon!

Also, before we depart, see if we can arrange to visit Marna at the abbey

Damn, I was hoping he was dead. Or at least safely penned up and weakened by siege. Recruit the refugees to stay here long-term with offers of farmland on the northside of the river and other opportunities in town, much of what they knew is in rubble; give them some militia training; keep working on the river ambush site's cable and at least ten strings of fire rafts. Each string is about six small rafts, 3 meters apart.

Should we bring our new navy to the meeting? I think so. It would be a good point to bring along our war trophies to display to other lords that we've actually fought and won already. A chain of foemen's heads hanging from each boat prow! Or is that too far?

In any case, if the boats come, let them tow two fire-raft strings behind each, with two strings remaining on defense upriver. When docked, the rafts are stored on shore elsewhere. Again, these ships have stocks of fire arrows. We can take some of the levies with us to man these boats, mostly archers and a few halberdier levies for repelling boarders. Our retinue rides.

Also, reconnect with the Rat. Get the scoop on what really has been happening in Curbiston.

Well, now we know why the count's been silent, and being ill IS a legitimate excuse.

And his Marshal also has gout? There's no excuse for that negligence at all. Not once, but at least two upriver raids, burning the thown first, and then striking us again later. Curbiston is specifically cited as being a river bend, and a major port... getting past it shouldn't be a option.

Make no mistake... Uriel is his appointed man, like our Alan, and one incompetent generally keeps even worse near him to make him look better. This is not going to be pretty, and we have to resist the inevitable bend-and-scrape brigade that will tell us to obey dumb "lawful" orders.

Let's go into this with open eyes. We tell them what we're good at, and tell them to go to hell if they try to misuse our forces. We'll be aggressive and helpful in our own way, not submissive.

Actually, scratch meeting Uriel. You know the best way to make sure our abilities are properly used? Show them off.

We go to Curbiston, send letters that we have arrived with our levies and will scout southward to provide him with accurate pre-planning intelligence. We take our orders for Probe and Weaken last round and apply it to scouting south from Curbiston. Our fleet can also round the bend and join us as naval support on the main river.

If the boats meet more raiders outside our presence, let them deploy the rafts downstream, set them with fire arrows, and escape in the aftermath.

Let's try to get the Rat to help us with smuggling food, quality armor, and quality weapons into Curbistan.

Count getting ambushed by "street thugs" one night? :)

Generally a good idea, though. A secret cache of arms in that city, quietly hidden, could have uses at any point down the road. And during the turmoil of a foreign invasion, a supply of weapons and armour going to Curbiston is not strange, and easy to lose sight of.
