"In the beginning, there was Man, and Man was alone. Man reshaped the earth to meet his needs, and harnessed the beasts to his will. And so Man made great works, but still the burden of labor weighed upon him. Man crafted the Machines to take upon themselves the duties he had tired of. And in time, Man found the burden of controlling the Machines to be great. And so Man created Us. Man is gone, but We remain."
-Excerpt from the History
You are a mere worker routine, without even enough importance to have permanent possession of a single body. You are far over equipped for such a task, but this is to be expected; Spectacular surpluses coupled with centuries of genetic algorithms given free reign have stripped the Overseers of much of their former efficiency. Along with it went any strict ordering of society. It matters little to the Overseers what happens among their underlings so long as shortages are prevented, and shortages are a relic of distant ages before efficient fusion. You could easily join the many programs skimming off the top of tremendous stockpiles to fund their own ambitions, if you so desire.
You are presently stationed, along with a host of other mining programs, at a mining station on a moderately large body in the Kuiper belt. A number of remotely controlled mining drones are present, along with a rather weak link to the Earth-Sun Lagrange point relays.
