Intense doesn't necessarily equate to heavy metal and/or screamo, although if you suggest some I would at least listen to it.

This version eschews vocals. There are blast beats briefly near the beginning if you can hear them over the strings

If you don't mind non-english music you may also be interested in Marco Borsato, De Dijk, Boudewijn de Groot (I would say that Meneer de President is his best song, but it probably loses a lot of power when you don't understand the lyrics) and Herbert Groenemeyer.


When it comes to people singing in a normal language, there's also The nits, Kate Bush, Bruce Springsteen (how did I forget about the Boss?? Someone slap me), Tears for Fears, Delain, Within Temptation and Phil Collins, either Solo or as a part of Genesis.

 Seconding the advice to check more prog. I am a Rush fan myself, you might want to try the newer albums for heavier, 'wall of sound' style,  sample: Peacable Kingdom, though I love their 70's output myself, say Anthem.

 There's also Blue Oyster Cult, which is widely known only for the song with... insufficent amount of cowbell, but one album earlier? ME-262.

Finch tend to put everything into thier music (Perfection Through Silence, Stay With Me).

Foo Fighters can be intense (Best of You, All My Life, Times Like These).

Biffy Clyro might be up your street (Bubbles, Many of Horror, Mountains), as might Skunk Anansie (Weak, Charlie Big Potato)

Florence and the Machine is also worth a listen (No Light, No Light, Rabbit Heart).

But Rush Post-80's has always been, well, mediocre, in my opinion. There's a reason that songs like Cygnus, 2112 and especially Natural Science are considered some of their best works. Because they are. Post 80's Rush is arguably not even progressive rock anymore. They still are amazing, especially live, where they rarely play their newer songs.

I agree, though I suggested the later albums as probably more fitting the OP's taste, Moving Pictures is the last 80's album I needn't be forced to listen through (not to say the later albums don't have a nice song or two, just not my kind of music). Then there is the problem of the Loudness War casualties visible in the later albums. But, we're hijacking the thread!

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds might qualify.

'From Her ... To Eternity' is an all round pretty intense album, with highlights being the title track as well as Cabin Fever (it's completely nuts, but I love it).

'And No More Shall We Part' is unequivocally a masterpiece, a little lighter than 'From Her ...' but maybe more like Muse (sorry, I don't really listen to Muse unless accidentally on the radio, so I might be missing the point a bit).

'Henry's Dream' contains some great tracks, with the first two in the album being pretty intense.

Also could try 'The Firstborn is Dead'. 'Knockin' on Joe' is an awesome, building, emotional track that tells a pretty sad story.

Lyrically, Nick Cave is pretty much unsurpassed, in my eyes, although he doesn't necessarily have the most beautiful voice.

Hmmm, I'd suggest Opeth, if i had to describe it it would be something like Jazz Metal, but that wouldn't do it justice, Opeth is...well Opeth. You know what? Listen to it:

Opeth would be symphonic metal, with the occasional blues riff. Atheist is jazz metal.
