Brand new trailer for Topia Online, inspired by Dwarf Fortress
« on: December 31, 2012, 01:35:03 am »

We aspire to be the MMORPG version of Dwarf Fortress, check out our brand new trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uExyqtsWbeo

Topia Online is an exciting new sandbox MMORPG where the players have free reign over the game world.  We're designing an MMORPG that simulates a realistic ecosystem. From the beginning, we knew that we wanted to create an online game where you could truly 'do anything'. In order to accomplish that, we have built a powerful set of tools that the players themselves can use to expand the game world and it's features.

Our aim is to provides endless creative possibilities for players of all backgrounds. Our development team is using the same tools that the players will be using to build the game world. The tools will allow players with little to no technical experience to create their own cities, dungeons, trade routes, bandit camps, and so forth. However, players will not be able to just create things from thin air. They will have to gather resources from the land, hire workers, and defend their homes in order to accomplish their goals.

Topia Online is powered by a game engine that can process many thousands of scripts per second. Every creature in the game world will have their own agenda and personality. But how is this possible? It's possible because every creature in the game is 'owned and operated' by a player. There are no 'NPCs', except the ones that players create and program themselves. Although each player has a 'main character' like any other MMORPG, you can also control dozens of other characters that are 'always present' in the game world.

Our team is built from a core group of friends that have been in the IT industry for many years. We're experienced software developers, designers, and artists. We have the technical skills and drive to follow through with our commitments to deliver an amazing game for the world to enjoy.

How exactly does the fighting system work?

From what little I can discern from the trailer it seems to be press buttons to perform attacks.

Very nice trailer. As I've said before, if there wasn't permadeath and you couldn't be killed while not even logged in, I'd already be throwing my money at you. Everything else about it looks *perfect*. As it stands, I wish you the best of luck in developing the game and cross my fingers that eventually someone will make a version that I would actually enjoy playing, or that you eventually decide to make a non-permadeath server (in which case, I will begin throwing money at you, as will my mother and a few friends who are also looking for an open sandbox MMO but without much combat or risk of losing what we've built).

Also, I agree that it would be good to put more information in the first post.

Hey there Fikes, ive modified the post to include more details, and I modified the video link with the trailer + commentary for a total of 14 minutes of video.  I didn't post the previous bay12 thread, and it was a bit unorganized.  This is an official announcement about the game from myself, the project owner.  Thank you!

Y'know the smart thing would be to just rename the previous thread.

There is a "Play Now" button on the website that asks for a login...

As tempted to pledge as I am, I still have concerns about the permadeath thing. I may get the $10 pledge to try out the game in the beta.

Do you have evidence to support your claims? If you do I would appreciate you bringing said evidence to light.

I think this is because the market for massively multiplayer online games like this has already been met by Dofus, Haven and Hearth, Love, and a handful of other games both independent and otherwise, and because this isn't the time of year where people are generous with their money. If the Kickstarter had started sometime around March or April I think it might have been a bit more successful than it is at this time.
