Beekeeping: how do I keep bee?
« on: December 30, 2012, 05:37:28 pm »

So I've decided, finally, to test it out. Mainly because modded bees are a feature in my mod (but there's not much alteration - the bite syndrome, the name, the name and values of products; here's their code
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
)

There's 5 hives outside now, they've all been there for some time and are all "ready to be split". But the beekeeper won't do anything, even though there's a clear path to the hives and he's got the labor enabled.

What do?

Have you built any more empty hives for him to put the split hives into? Alternatively if you are attempting to harvest it have you set the hives to be harvested?

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

They're all set to be harvested.

Disable all other labors on him, then burrow him to the hives and food?

Someone has to ask the obvious.

Do you have jugs available?

Do you have jugs on hand for the royal jelly?  Then you'll need more jugs when you process the honeycomb into honey (liquid) and wax.

Jugs are available.

...So I just read that a harvestable hive should show a honeycomb and a royal jelly glob when viewed for items. Mine don't show these, even though they are supposed to be ready.

This is the first time I'm doing anything with bees. So, um... could someone check if I coded something wrong, in the first post spoiler? Pls?

Um... Apparently, it just takes more time for products to appear than just for split-ability.

Sorry everyone.

It happens, especially with such a low profile job as beekeeping. Don't know many people who use it often.

I imagine beekeeping would be rather more employed if it were not for the bug that made Dwarves roll around shouting "the bees!" at where they think bees should be...

I love beekeeping, and it is quite sustainable after the hives are filled, you just need to use burrows or the stand-pointlessly-until-hunger-kicks-in bug comes up

The proper thing to do is to cause a cave in beneath all the hives. (I've heard designating a dirt road over them causes hive destruction but I have to test this myself to see.)

Beekeeping. Not worth it maaaaaaaan. Just make wood/glass spike balls. You definitely don't need the wax for crafts, I don't think there's anything useful for it, and no reason to cook it, because quarry bush leaves and (if you can get around the hillarious "dwarves won't touch these" bug) sweet pod syrup. And you can't boozify it.

You do realise this is DF, right? There is definitely no such thing as "Not worth it". Also, MEAD!!
