Help on upgrading my graphics card?
« on: December 29, 2012, 03:47:09 pm »

So I don't know a whole lot about hardware.  Like, at all.  I was pleased with myself when I realized the headphone slot on the back worked just as well as the headphone slot on the front.

This is the computer I have, all parts are still stock:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c01969946&lang=en&cc=us&contentType=SupportFAQ&prodSeriesId=4079858&prodTypeId=12454

Just glancing at Newegg, and comparing the interface slot, along with my budget, these are the two that look most promising and/or the only ones available:

If I go with the cheaper one, I'd need a new power supply, which would run about $20, and if I went with the more expensive card, I might be able to get a friend to give me her power supply, because she recently upgraded and has an unused 300W.

This is about my price range, in the $100 or less area for all parts.  As stated, I may get a 300W PSU for free, so that can go against the cost, if applicable.  I may end up not getting anything in the end though, because I have other money needs that may be more or less expensive than I previously thought.

The link is kind of broken. Which products are you trying to compare?

Bah, alright...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150659
$35 after rebate, would need new PSU for $20, totalling $55 (plus shipping) - but one review says it works fine on 220W even though it claims 400W.  Reviews also say that it doesn't include a bracket.  I don't know what this means.

$90 with no rebate, but potentially free 300W PSU to match it.

A friend I've been talking to, pointed out that the cheaper is 80 processes and 2GB, while the expensive is 120 and 512MB, along with 650 vs 600 MHz on the core clock, which makes the cheaper one look a lot better to me...  The cheaper is also a heatsink, which means a lot quieter...

You wont get much performance increase with the ones listed.  None are really designed for gaming and are a waste of your money, even performing under what Intel integrated gfx can do now.

Maybe:

Spend just a little more and get 5x performance increase vs card you listed.

Except my motherboard doesn't support them, on account of PCI Express x16.  If I were going to upgrade my motherboard, I'd just get a whole new computer too.

My current integrated graphics will run Skyrim on lowest with moderate-low FPS, depending on the area and how much water is nearby.  I just want to run it with stable FPS.  I'm not very picky, but right now many games are "unplayable" or "theoretically can be played" and I only want "runs satisfactory on low settings".

They will still work fine if pcie 16 slot.  Is like how any old usb device will still work in a usb 3 port.

Looking closer at the cards you listed, performance wise they are almost exactly the same so idk why theres such a price gap.

Tho again compared to a 7750 they are under 1/5th performance.  On gpubenchmark both cards u listed are around 200 point mark, HD 7750 is 1500 roughly.

http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/7000/7750/Pages/radeon-7750.aspx#3

The 7750 will run most games just under max settings and a few @ max.  Especially x platform games that are on Xbox or PS3 too.

Honestly, I would say it is better to go with a sure thing and pick your first choice for a video card and purchase the power source unit to go along with it rather than get the other video card without the guarantee of a power source unit that could work with said part. But that is just me.
