possessed armorer
« on: June 01, 2008, 01:21:00 pm »

My armorer got as far as Professional and now he's possessed.

"bars... metal..."
"cloth... thread..."
"leather... skin..."

So I'm butchering what I have to butcher to try and make him some leather.  There's metal around, but only gold, iron, pig iron, and steel.  I have no cloth, but the elves might be show up soon if I didn't piss them off too much with my last, leather-based faux pas.

The rub is, if he wants specific metals or leathers, I'm not going to be able to satisfy him.  If all he needs is some cloth, I can help.

Anyone know how this works or if there's a way to find out exactly what he wants.  Sucks that it's my only armorer and he's not going to get a stat raise out of it even if I get him what he needs.

The forge.

The elves made it before he lost his shit.  All they had was rope reed, but I bought a ton of it.

Nope.  I was wrong.  He'd already went bonkers before the elves made it to the Trade Depot.

Dammit.  It took years to get his Armoring up.  Now I've got to start all over.

Also note that he wanted THREAD not CLOTH.
The fastest way is to cultivate a few rope reed plants and quickly turn them into thread (in loom).

Actually, the loom turns the thread into cloth.  A thresher turns the pig tail into thread at the farmer's workshop.  Besides which, dwarves in moods never want thread (as far as I know), they only ever want cloth.

Why do I like Dwarf Fortress so much?  It's hard to learn, harder to play, and downright impossible to win.

...

I mean, what's not to like?

They also never want specific items now. So just make whatever you've got and hope for the best.

Yes... it's been changed from the original version. Now they just grab the closest thing of the item they want. Example: Fey metalsmith wants metal bars. He's got a gold bar right next to him. He'll take that gold bar. He wants leather. You've got a stockpile full of leather downstairs. He grabs the first thing he sees; swordfish leather. He wants a shell. Uh oh...

Always start maps with Turtles... and instantly select them so they cannot be cooked.

Anyhow, I kinda wish what they took was a bit more randomated then it currently is even if it takes them pretty far into your fortress

Though it seems almost random to me since they seem to walk over Bins to get to the one bin.

Dwarves have NEVER wanted thread, ever. When it says cloth... thread... they always want cloth. You don't need to save thread for moods, they won't ever use it.

They used to want either silk or planet fiber (though they did not care if it was rope reed or pig tail) and I think that's still true, but I'm not 100% sure.  I always keep a few pieces of both laying around just in case (preferably GCS silk for the major $$$).

So does it mean that they sat "cloth... thread..." for silk too or is it "cloth... silk..." ?

Very true.  I lost 4 or so dwarves due to not having shells.  Now, I've got shells.

Incidentally, my strange mood guy is asking for blocks, metal bars, shells, and glass.  But he's only got shells.  Is he waiting for more of everything else to be made?  And does the glass have to be cut, or rough?  Sorry for hijacking the thread, but makes more sense than doing my own.

If you look at the claimed workshop, you see all the items he wants, including ones that have already been grabbed. Also, you see them in order, but not necessarily starting from the first item the dwarf needs. Dwarves will grab the items they need only in a specific order.

So, if you're seeing "blocks... metal... shells... glass... blocks... metal... shells... glass..." in that order, and he's got shells, then he needs glass next, then blocks, and then metal. He won't get the blocks until after he's got the glass, and he won't get the metal until after he's got the blocks. This makes it easy to [t] over a workshop, see what's been grabbed by the moody dwarf and marked "TSK", and know exactly what the dwarf needs next.

Dwarves who want glass want raw glass. I believe raw green glass will do the trick all the time in this version.

Note that if a dwarf's list of needed items seems to linger for extra time on some material, it may be that he wants two or three of that thing. So if it's something you don't have a lot of, try making extras.

Not true.  My latest mood was an armorer who wanted "Silver bars...".  This was on 0.38c

As far as I've seen in my latest ex-fort (63 artifacts!) the dwarves are picky about certain things, though not everything.  They fetch gems (uncut at least) and leather according to what is closest, but metal-wise they always want something specific.  Not sure about the rest though.
