Having trouble finding a shop
« on: December 27, 2012, 07:22:58 am »

So I downloaded DF today and jumped immediately into adventure mode.

The problem is, where do I find a shop? I can't see square as I am using Phoebus' graphic set (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=57557.0)

I checked every house, but there seemed to be no shopkeeper. Where do I find one? The yellow part with a door on it has no shop, and the green part with a door on it doesn't even have houses.

Tip: These days, nobody really cares about you taking stuff as long as it's not marked with $Tags$, which to say is that the item is from a shop.

So instead of looking for shops, just go grab some stuff from your local fortress - or two, or hell - five if you didn't find what you wanted.

Food you can find aplenty by slaughtering measly little furry animals (just not furry wamblers/bunnies/really small stuff), and water is practically unlimited as long as you 'I'nteract with a bag, or just your backpack near a source of water. Merry Post-Christmas and happy 'venturin.

Expect this to happen:

I believe shops and markets are only found in towns and capitals at the moment.

Yepp, no shops in hamlets. Anyway, they are quite useless currently, because the good stuff lies either in keeps for free or, slightly more dangerous, in the dungeon below.
Settlements are marked as brown areas on your lokal traveling map. There will be also a description like 'houses'. If there is a shop near your current area, it will be also marked by name/type. On the world travel map, look for little houses, grates or wells (these are the keeps in your graphic set).

I have set a rule for myself to never take stuff in the keeps. Only from dungeons and quests. (I have yet to find a good weapon in a shop...)

If you want a really good weapon then you must look for the Master (weaponskill)man/dwarf, they seem to almost always have weapons in higher quality. They def seem to hold most of the masterwork weapons in my games.
