Scary Monsters
« on: December 26, 2012, 10:44:44 am »

I spend as much time adventuring as anything, and while I'm currently learning the creature raws in order to make some nasties myself [first on the list - an entire set of Dwemer automata], I'd love to have more stuff to tangle with in the meantime.  I've already got Fear the Night along with Fort Defense, Iv0ry's races, and the slime mod.  Any other really nasty critters I can easily add to a DF install?  The Monster Hunter mod was cool, but it hasn't been updated in a while and there are some issues [the largest seem to be interaction related with monsters that used to have firebreath]

You want something 'scary', or something 'fun'?

Little of each.  I like to run around in Adventure mode so I need plenty of nasties to fight.  Plus, it makes fortresses more FUN.

You might want to check out the 'abominations' thread if you haven't already. It's got some good stuff. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=118511.msg3748219#msg3748219

I would also mod in balrogs. Balrogs are cool. In fact, I've already modded in balrogs..... balrogs are cool.....

But do they have wings?

I will check that out though, I've always felt like megabeast survivability [or lack thereof] in worldgen is one of the biggest obstacles to FUN adventuring.

Just make a world with advanced parameters with absurd amounts of megabeast caves?

Bad idea, barely recognizeable :P. Monsters should be scary not by looks, but by actions.
Look at xenomorphs from Post-Apocalypse mod.
And if you need sprites, here are my meager spriting skills:

Color is a matter of taste.

I made balrogs for a languishing lotr mod; I gave them a 50% chance of having wings :P
