During the third world-war handfuls of mankind were sent into space for preservation of the human race, the war waged on for several years until a stalemate happened regarding nuclear warheads. Most of life on earth was eradicated, anything that survived was horribly mutated from the radiation and surviving humans sought shelter within the earth.
Researchers in space knew returning the earth was impossible in its current radioactive state, which would last for centuries to come. Staying in space was not a long term option as there was not enough supplies or room for a population to grow, let alone the current population to survive for years to come. The only solution, and fastest one to procure was to merge human dna, with radioactive properties. It was impossible for the current surviving generation to receive the treatment, however the next generation pre-borns will be treated within their mothers. As a known and accepted side-effect the mothers of course died due to radiation poisoning and only a few of the next generation survived, and the survivors were underdeveloped.
Time was running short so the great minds left on the space station devised a machine that would act on behalf of mother nature, and so the DNA Replicators were made, and the first generation of R-Humans was born. Tolerance to radiation was incredibly high within the children, but being completely radioactive they were born sterile.
After a few more years, and the new R-Humans reaching an adult percentage of 38% the technology to take DNA from the R-Humans and merging them together to produce more R-Humans the same way natural insemination worked was a success. And so the remaining human population taught all they knew to the R-Humans sending them down to earth for colonization.
48 Years later R-Human colonies numbered in the 20's and populations reached close to the 400,000's thanks to the replicators, but conventional and traditional energy sources were dwindling or becoming more and more difficult to acquire, the resource shortage that spurred WW3 saw to that. Without power, no more replication which was a dire issue for the continuing survival of mankind. And nuclear would only give them another 20 to 30 years with the rate they where using power, so research went into quantum nuclear power.
After six years the first prototype of the
CNC (Crystallized Nuclear Catalyst) in which the radiation is forced into a state of rapid acceleration to such an extent that it remains in stasis, creating a solid crystal of radioactive energy, just 1g of uranium can make a CNC that can power a small country for thousands of year with excess power left over. Extending the life of nuclear power and making use of and cleaning up the atmosphere of radiation, and thus begins mankinds second fall.
With the advances of technology and crystallized energy the crisis of power was over, without a common goal the tensions between colonies caused wars around the planet again beginning WW4. Mankind would have warred far longer then WW3, but the colony named Bright Eclipse created a weapon that ended the war, along with 89% of the living population. The weapon was named Black Sun and the colonists of Bright Eclipse proclaimed it was the next step for the evolution of man, and when the weapon was fired all radiation around it crystallized causing chain reactions of crystallization around the world. The surviving R-Humans were the ones investigating the vast cavern system under the world caused by WW3, only to surface and find the world above was turned into a dusty, jagged, crystal wasteland.
The Survivors managed to find some still functioning Replicators and find some generators that still ran, from here WW4 was declared as the last War as a 5th would surely end mankind once and for all. So the Alliance of Peacekeepers was formed to ensure that diplomacy was used instead of fists, and those that failed to comply was executed.
80 years later life once again thrived, even if wildlife was horribly deformed and partially crystallized and feral. Due to an increase in workplace injuries, mainly caused by the mutant wildlife, research was developed towards bionics since regular prosthetics weren't cutting it anymore due to weight and mobility. A group of cultists based around the Zodiac constellation Gemini believed that cybernetics was an abomination, and insult to the creator and began privately working on the replicators to perform cloning so that they would produce an army of same minded soldiers, and acts of terrorism sprung forth from the new group, taking on the name The Federation of Gemini and are now the Peacekeepers greatest opposition.
Now guerrilla warfare and sabotages have been happening all over causing the peacekeepers great grief trying to quell this outstanding rebellion.
