Is there a consensus on the source of magic yet?
ie. The Deities, innate to all living things or the "Your Mind Makes It Real"-approach?

And can someone drop a few quotes regarding what Tarn is looking for concerning "magic"?

If I was in charge of magic design for DF, the source would be "all of the above."
Some dwarves are like D&D clerics. Others channel Nature's Wrath or their own energy. Some would simply use the magic found in certain items or substances.

As of right now there is no "one" source of magic in the idea phase.

It can be bestowed upon by gods, it can be taught, and it can be researched (current in game mechanics)

In the Threetoe story the sources included from the gods, from nature itself, and from another dimension entirely.

So yeah "All of the above" is a very interesting dirrection to go.

Wouldn't powers bestowed by gods be too random? Correct me if I'm wrong, but most of the gods I've seen aren't that much useful other than the occasional mining or wealth god but sometimes I've seen the camel god who had complete control of fingernails. Sure, it would be nice to have your mages ask for the camel god's blessings and receive beautifully cut nails but at what cost?

Will the mages have to constantly meditate in their rooms? Does the whole fort have to pray for the mages? Will their be some ritual or blood sacrifice? Magic nails are fine if the sacrifice was a cup of water but if they had to sacrifice a legendary miner and spend the chanting and praying just cut their nails it doesn't seem worth it.

If this will be the case (pretty sure it won't though), I suggest that you can change only your 7 starting dwarves beliefs so they can worship a god beneficial and useful. All the other immigrants will have their on beliefs. The children of the starting 7 might believe in their parents religion or choose to follow their own. Then the starting 7, after many useful immigrants arrive, could be converted into mages and pray to their blood god for mighty weapons to slay their goblin foes.

I wish I could unwatch a thread because every time I look at this I can feel myself dying faster
Dying of laughter?
Dying of pure unbridled hatred, actually.

Such gods don't exist. There is no "Fingernails" sphere.  ::)
Sure, rainbows/fish/etc could be random, but most gods should have occasionally useful abilities.

Seriously, since each dwarf worships 2 gods and most gods should be able to grant useful abilities, this shouldn't be a problem.

No, you're making up problems with no reason to exist.

As well I don't think the gods will be SO active and powerful that they will slowly convert your members into demigods of power and might.
