Lovecraft didn't protect his copyrights, and he died starving and in great pain -- unable to live off of his contributions to society in the end, despite how numerous they were.

Yes but he intentionally didn't protect his copyrights. It was actually very sporting of him and is one of the major reasons why his works still remain in the public consciousness today.

Yes, it was very sporting of him to starve to death for the good of humanity. We, as humans, are so much the better people for having starved him instead of, you know, letting him be creative for a little longer by feeding him. Making his life a little easier.

It's a great thing that we didn't do that.

Edit: I know it wasn't lack of food that directly killed him, but society sure didn't make it easier for him.

Since she's been mentioned: If you're a US Republican you should know that Ayn Rand was an atheist.
Also that she was born in Russia, experienced the revolution growing up, and got a degree at a communist university before she visited America, realised how much better conditions were over there, and decided to jump over and become an illegal immigrant.

Which honestly explains a bit about why she had such an extreme libertarian view.

If he protected his copyrights it probably wouldn't have helped him. It just would have meant no one would use his content.

Litterature was REALLY cutthroat for years upon years. It wasn't uncommon for authors to make nothing on best selling books.

Heck the music industry often does the same thing.

Shakespear was Sexist and Racist.

Though that should be obvious given his plays... Yet in school we were taught it was completely the opposite.

Lovecraft was a guy with bigoted, narrow views, well beyond those common at the time. He seems deeply unpleasant to be around, and his prejudices seeped into his writing, but he still had a great imagination and was generally a pretty good science fiction/horror writer.

Which is interesting when you think about some of his themes. Given that he is one of the few writers who don't make humans special.

Language is a complex thing. You would be surprised what words are derogitory now that weren't before... or words that were considered perfectly acceptible and were turned evil by propaganda.

So it isn't "so obvious" that I should know the uses of words throughout time.
Don't be apologetic, you're only human :P

Hmmm. They probably shouldn't have taught you he was x or y. Shakespeare never gave any official clarification about his thoughts, and the things he wrote would lend credence to whichever spectrum. So you're probably going to have to strike off Shakespeare.

And what if he's just being laconic? I don't see what's wrong with having discussions on a discussion board >_>

I don't know... I find this thread kinda offensive...

And by kinda I mean outright offensive.

In that it is about coloring reading with the authors behind them. In that we SHOULD be coloring our oppinions of books.

I mean does Romeo and Juliet mean anything differently when you know that Shakespeare was a horrible horrible racist?

Does a Rose cared for any other gardener smell as sweet?

I mean does Romeo and Juliet mean less when you know that Shakespeare was a horrible horrible racist?
Some of the most bootifulz poetry comes from Caliban, a native islander in the Tempest who is seen falling victim again and again to powerful Europeans. The one whose only use of the language "learned" on him was to curse; that perhaps his "utterances" were his culture that got assimilated.
Again, we cannot know for certain.

Though I do agree, this thread is rather distasteful.

Nah, Romeo and Juliet means something different when you realize Shakespeare was using it to satirize/mock romantic love :P

It wasn't so much a romantic/tragedy play as a, "Look how goddamn crazy these two idiots are" play.

It does bring up some questions about Othello...

What questions?

Did you READ Othello?

Mind you Othello is a Moor but he is hardly potrayed sympathetically if you really think hard about him and his actions.
