Goddamnit, why did I read the last few posts in here. That was depressing and you're only a decade or so ahead of me.

Ah, but thats how the reality of being a pre-middle aged adult is. The world belongs to those younger than you who have all thier potential left to waste. In my late teens and early twenties I was going to change the world, I was indestructible, I would live forever and I was going to be an astronaut. As you age you lose the naievity that allows ytou to consider your ambitions possible and you settle for less, rightly or wrongly. Bang go the dreams for one reason or another (love, eyesight and missed opportunities in my case), and all of a sudden you need somewhere to live, which generates bills, and so on down the feedback loop. Now life seems an endless sequence of get up, go to work, come home, go to sleep UNTIL THE DAY I RETIRE, which will be in my mid 70's the way things are going, giving me a few lazy years before death. I love my kids, but they contribute to the need for me to do a job I dont really like (if nothing else it has a high degree of security in exchange for workload and not great rates of pay) despite being kinda good at it. Hooray. As RedKing suggests - never settle down. Once you are settled, your commitments become a millstone around your neck - life starts to own you instead of the other way around.

beaurocracy
At this point, I would totally be down with a system of governance by bears. At least with bears, you know where you stand.

"Wilson. Smith. Both of you are up for this promotion. Wilson, you've done a commendable, tireless job for the last 8 years. Smith, you're married to my niece.
However, the promotion will awarded to whomever can outrun this FUCKING BEAR. Because he's hungry."

(Why does this seem like an Oatmeal comic?)

Sounds like folks would at least be in pretty good shape in bearworld. It would also mean that in a high functioning society bears would be very hungry indeed.

Instead of GDP or HDI or anything, instead the measure of a country is decided by HBI. Hungry Bear Index.

Fat cats would not prosper in a bearocracy.

So Usain Bolt is the 1% now?

So Usain Bolt is the 1% now?
Usain Bolt would be the new Bill Gates.
Meanwhile, Bill Gates would have the prosperity outlook of one of the non-super-fast people in Jamaica.

For my part, this would initially mean a net decrease in wealth, as I'm pretty slow and have low lung capacity. But, I'm good with animals and crafty enough to hang out with larger, tastier options.

I'm pretty fast.  Maybe not 1% fast, but definitely 5%.  However, I'm also good with animals.  One more vote for swift social justice!

Also occurs to me that America would quickly become one of the poorer, less populous countries (with an extremely low HBI, at least until there's a predator die-off), while Kenya would become the next Zurich. Maasai don't give a shit 'bout no bears.
