So for this holiday i have been put on a really interesting assignment: Space Stations, what their use are, how they are buildt, how they support human life now, whats required for permanent stays(I.E cities in space)

And then what i would need to get a job at a company making such things. I tried taking a look at SpaceX's website but thats really confusing.

What i have to do in this assignemnt:
Writing reports, keep a diary of my work.
Make a practical product, like a model, wether in 3d or in paper.

Thing is:
I know jackshit about a good program to illustrate that it
Wikipedia has a TVtropes effect on me.
Google says nothing.
No engineers in my family.

Ideas:
Find an engineer to discuss the subject with
I have Kerbal Space Program and i have tried a bit of Orbiter, could any of that be used for the model presentation?

Isnt there a space thread there already and isnt a space station a bit too specific?

SpaceX doesnt really build space stations. You'd want http://www.bigelowaerospace.com/ for commercial space station companies. Course, they are still just starting up.

In more experienced firms there is

RKK Energia (Russia) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.P._Korolev_Rocket_and_Space_Corporation_Energia
Boeing (Seattle) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_Company

Smaller but still big names include
Astrotech(Texas) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astrotech_Corporation
Thales Alenia Space(Cannes) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thales_Alenia_Space

But each one of these four groups manufactured at least one major section of the International Space Station(and there were others as well)

Basically, any large space station will not be the product of any single company. Lots of different people are going to be putting their mark on the thing.

I can point you to an old "abandonware" game called Project: Space Station, that will do very little in educating you about how actual space stations work. On the upside, you can land shuttles, and use your tetris skills to build your station. Whee!

If you had any specific questions, I might be able to help (Solar System Physicist). I would start by looking at SkyLab and Mir, and how both of those shaped the ISS. Mir in particluar is a really interesting overview of late cold war Russian space technology.

I also thought about building a space station in Kerbal Space Program or Orbiter as a sort of demonstration. You kniow like doing a short video mash up.
Like the process of launching it up and assembling it with an orbital tug of sorts.

Yea, just make sure you got everything you need to record it and a good note to have:
Expect to record the video more then once, many things can go bad, from a faulty rendering to nothing being able to record
