Continuing to hide under the wood pile, you realize two things. First, there are no animals anywhere near the clearing. No birds have been singing for hours, and there is no trace of so much as a grasshopper.

Secondly, the shadows are lengthening. Soon, you will be able to escape again into the forest.

As shadow begins to fall, you decide to consume two or three trees before moving on. You find that they taste disgusting and are unbelievably dumb, though you are pleasantly surprised to note that only one of them caught fire.
