You cannot possess the grass, as it is grass. However, you can absorb its life force, and you do so. Over a period of an hour or two, you leech the energy out of roughly a square meter of grass and undergrowth. In doing this, you feel... complete. You feel power coursing through the air around you, smothering light and flowing through the air. By the time you finish with this task, a considerable patch of plants are dead, gray, and crumbling. The area around it is rather scorched, and you realize that the method of absorbing this life force was rather inefficient.

You feel alive, awake. You are now visible as a patch of unnaturally black shadow in the absence of total darkness.

Form: Incorporeal darkness
Area of influence: small (Sadly, you are unable to exert your influence over anything much bigger than a rabbit. Though the amount of life energy wasted in the process of consuming a rabbit may well start a forest fire...)
Visibility: Very low in dark areas, blatantly obvious in any amount of light

You follow your senses, allowing them to guide you to what is in fact a young squirrel inside a hollow log. The squirrel's tail flicks nervously. Even its primitive mind knows something is not right, but what can it do?

Well shit, its head exploded. The rest of the squirrel is now a charred mess, and if you had a physical form you would be covered in squirrel brains. As it is, the bit of log you're hiding in is covered in squirrel brains and even to an evil entity of darkness, that's just not pleasant.

You manage to salvage very little energy from this incident due to the prey splattering bits of itself everywhere.

FYI, you can get some attributes of what you consume. The grass gave you the ability to withstand light, at least for a short period of time. Properly consuming an animal will allow you greater insight into the minds of beasts, as well as giving you the ability to see properly.

Eat some leaves in the tree.  Survey surroundings?  Look for other small animals to consume.

You drain a branch or two of energy, then happen upon an unwary bird. With a choking black tendril around the animal, you feed on it, reducing its corpse to a smoking husk. Smoldering, the dead bird and its nest drop to the forest floor. You find a secluded branch and focus on examining the newly consumed life energy. Upon doing so, you find yourself able to see, see properly. In addition to your ability to sense life forms, you now realize you are near the edge of a great forest, with rolling grasslands to the southeast. Looking down, you realize you are on a hill or mountain, and a river snakes its way through the valley to the south. Two or three miles northwest, you sense five or six larger creatures, but these are different. Self-aware, intelligent, but asleep.

Hmm I'd say go into the forest and consume animals/plants until we build up our strength.  After we get stronger go back to the house and eat everyone inside it.
