The Random Frontier: A RTD Space Exploration Game!
« on: December 19, 2012, 11:56:50 pm »

                                          Part 1: Wasteland Earth

For thousands of years man has taken  mother earths bounty without limit, confident
that it would never end. Sadly that was not the case.

At the beginning  of the 22nd century humanity was facing a terrible truth. Earth, the planet that
they lived on since man slept in caves and hunted with spears, could no longer support the
11 billion people who lived on it. The ever growing population consumed its resources
at an alarming rate that could not be maintained. Oil and water became harder and harder
to come by, which lead to  crop failure and starvation across world. The rising price of
food and goods made made crime rates skyrocket, and riots and looting became
common place  as fathers and mothers struggled to feed their families.

Entire forests were cut down to make room for more farmland, and to house the
enormous homeless populations. Pollution was at record levels as well, as we continuously
filled the air with our waste, with out having any trees to clean it. As a result
massive clouds of smog began to cover parts of the world, mostly over major cities,
and in some cases they blocked out the sun completely. Not even the
ground beneath our feet was safe, as we striped it bare of all its minerals.

With more and more of the world becoming uninhabitable, we hand to come
to grips with the very real possibility of going extinct, ether slowly
by drought, famine, and diseases, or quickly by a  nuclear war over the
earths last remaining resources. Our own hope, we soon realized, was
to leave the confines of our solar system, and find a new planets to call our own.

To do this, the worlds greatest minds were gathered and given one goal. They had to
build a spacecraft that was capable of travailing too other solar systems, that could scan
and explore planets when it got there, and finally it had be able to defend it self from
any threats it and its crew may find along the way. With  humanity's hope resting squarely on
their shoulders, they began there work.

On may 11, of the year 2217, the scientists revealed the results of there tireless  labor. Made up
almost entirely of parts and technology developed by its creators, the ship that they affectionately
called ( luck roll: 2 ) The Imperial Unicorn, is the most advanced spacecraft man has ever created.
Not only is it equipped with our strongest shields and weapons, but it also has the worlds
first F.T.L drive. The drive makes it capable of traveling deeper into space then any thing that
came before it. It was truly one of our greatest creations, an our only chance of finding a new home.

But A ship needs more then technology to function, it need a crew. That is why you and five
others have been selected to go on a this dangerous mission into the unknown. Will you succeed in
bringing us into a new age of peace and prosperity? Or will you die along with our hope for a better
future? The choice is yours!

Welcome to The Random Frontier, a RTD Unlike any you played before!

How will this RTD be different then the hundreds of others that our on this
forum you may ask? In two key ways. The Crew and captain system, and choices
with consequences.

What do you mean by choices with consequences?

In most RTD forum games your choices can effect the skills, and abilities you gain, the items you
collect, the npc that join you, even the story of the area you are in. However, they usually do
not have a dramatic effect out side of a given area. If you were on the killer panda planet, and
decided to nuke the killer panda HQ, it would not change the story five worlds down the line,
beyond skills, items, and npc's that you gather there. This RTD will be different, in
The Random Frontier you and the rest of the crew can go were all of you want, do what all of you
want and have the adventurer you all want to have. whether it be exploring new worlds, or just
hunting for space pirates. Hover you must be careful and not act without thinking. Every choice
you make can effect the story, and could have consequences that last long after your character
has died.

What is the crew captain system, and how dos it work?

With all the freedom that this RTD will offer, there needs to be a way to keep players organized
and going in the same general direction, while at they same time limiting players freedom as little
as possible. That is were the crew and captain system comes into play.

How it works is on the ship there will be six players, and six classes. Their can only be one player
per class, so you cant have two engineers or two medics, only one of each. Each one
of the classes has variety of ability's they can preform. All except for the captain
who has no normal ability's. He instead has two captain ability's, namely direct order, and
too the brig. These ability's are used to command the crew of his ship.

Direct order: This gives the captain the ability to use one of his turn to make another crew
member use his to preform any action the captain wants. This will override any action
the crew member Wanted to do before or after the direct order was given.

Too the brig: This gives the captain the ability to use a turn to send a crew member to
the brig. When a crew member is in the brig he cannot preform any action,
besides using the start a mutiny ability. The captain can keep the crew member in the
brig indefinitely with out using his turns. Only one crew member may be in the brig at one time.

let me give you an example of how the captain ability's could be used. Lets say that the captain
wants to go too point A, but the pilot wants to go too point B. The captain could give the pilot
a direct order, forcing him to take the ship to point A, or he could just tell him to go there so
he could use his turn for something else. If the captain did not give the pilot a direct order,
the pilot could deiced to disobey the captain, and take the ship too B. If the pilot dose
this, the captain could ether ignore his act of insubordination, or he could send him to
the brig as punishment.

The crews start a mutiny ability

The captains ability's give him a lot of power, but it is balanced by the the crew part of the
crew and captain system, which is the start mutiny crew ability. At any point any member
of the can activate, or deactivate their start mutiny crew ability, without using a turn.
If the majority of the ships crew decides to activate the ability, a charisma check for
all crew members will take place. The crew member with the highest total number in
the check will be the new captain, and he will change classes with the old captain. A crew must
wait 5 turns before they can mutiny again after a new captain is chosen. This keeps crews
from changing captains over and over until they get one they like.

Will their be killer space pandas?

Its a distinct possibility, join the game if you want to find out.  ;D

RTD Instructions for newbies.

This is a roll to doge forum game, or RTD for short. In RTD forum games you create a
character to go on a turn based adventure by giving him a name, race, gender, ect. And
then picking his class, along with his attributes and skills.
These states, and a variety of other things affect the the outcome of dice rolls, also
known as checks. The checks determine the outcome of your turn, and  rage from 1 to 6,
using a six sided die, that will be rolled by me. The outcome of checks are as follows.

1: Its was a epic failure that made you wonder why you ever tried!

2: It was a major failure that will cause problems.

3: It was a minor failure, maybe next time?

4: It was a minor success, it helped, I guess.

5: It was a major success that will be remembered.

6: You did a little to well. Imagine a man cooking dinner with a flamethrower.

Ground and space combat Instructions

The game will have both ground and ship combat, Ground combat works like most RTD games.
Your actions will be skill, or attribute checked against your opponents. And if your check wins, you
may cause them damage, which will be applied realistically to your opponents body, their is no hp
stat. Every state or attribute will effect different areas of combat, so be careful. Having
one state very high will not guaranty victory. A variety of items and status effects will also effect ground combat.

Space combat combat works a bit differently. On every ship their are 7 non critical systems, weapons,
shields, engines, navigation, communication, transporters, and sensors. And 2 critical systems,
warp core, and life support. Each system has several functions that are controlled via the six
consoles placed throughout the ship. The weapons, navigation, communication, and sensors consoles
are located on the bridge. The engineers console is located in the engine room, it
controls the shields, engines, and warp core. The transporter console is located in the transporter
room. And finally the med console is located in the med bay, it controls the life support.
You must man the corresponding console if you wish to accesses a systems functions, and
only one crew member can man a console at a time. Manning a console will us a turn,
but unmanning it will not.

These systems can take damage, which will cause them to become less and less
effective, and eventually they will be completely destroyed. If  the non critical systems are
destroyed the crew will lose their benefit which will hurt your ships effectiveness, but wont cause
any direct problems. The critical systems are another matter entirely. If your warp core takes
to much damage, and is breached, the ship will explode, killing any one on it. And if you lose life
support on the ship, the crew will start to suffocate and eventually die. Because of their
importance, the critical systems are heavily armored, but you still must try your best to keep
them safe if you want to survive for very long. If a system takes damage you can repair it, but
this takes time, so plan on spending a lot of turns repairing a destroyed system. The process
can be sped up with high engineering checks, and multiple crew members repairing it.

Space battles can be won in multiple different ways. You could destroy all their
non critical system, which will cause them to surrender. You could destroy the enemy
ships warp core, or life support systems. You could cause  extreme damage to their
hull, making the ship unable to function. Or you could simply kill or capture their
entire crew. When you defeat a enemy ship, if you wish to loot it, you must ether transport,
or take a shuttle over to the enemy's ship search it. You will not automatically
receive it's valuables.

Character creation

To create a character you must first pick a name, and gender. Then describe how he, or she
looks, such as his, or her age, race, hair color, ect. After that you must give him, or her a
background story. Try to make it as detailed as you can, this helps me make the game better.

Next you need choose your characters class. Remember their can only be one active character
per class, and they will be given on a first come first serve bases. So please make sure the class
you want is not already taken. Their are six different classes, all with their own unique abilities,
but no skill or attribute bonuses. So if you want to be a medic that faints at the sight
of blood, you can.

                                                       Class list

Captain

Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because
he wants to do it. -Dwight Eisenhower

You could say that the captain is the most, important person on any star ship.
These leaders of men deiced the fates of all those under them. Whether or not that's a good
thing is up to the captain.

The captain class has the direct order, and the too the brig ability's.

Direct order lets him use a turn to order a crew member to do any thing he wants.

Too the brig lets the captain use a turn to send a crew member too the brig. When in
the brig the crew member can preform no action, besides using the start a mutiny ability.
Only one crew member may be in the brig at one time.

Engineer

A problem well stated is a problem half solved - Charles F. Kettering

The engineer is the work horse of a star ship. They keep the ship together, and power
going were it needs to go. Not to mention replacing the toilet paper in the bathrooms.

The engineer class has the power change, and the give her all shes got ability's.

Power change lets the engineer use a turn to take power from one system and give to to another. This will give a -1 to all actions that use the system with less power, and a +1 to the system
with more.

Give her all shes got lets the engineer use a turn to double the power of the engines. This will
give all checks that involve heavy use of the engines two combined dice rolls instead of the
normal one. This effect last five turns, but afterward the engines will be destroyed, and will
need to be  repaired before they can be used again.

Gunner

Nothing is so exhilarating in life as to be shot at with no result. -Winston Churchill

Gunners are for those times in life when you need a very large hole in something
very big, and very scary,

Gunners have the fire at will, and the mech suit ability's.

Fire at will ability is automatically activated when the gunner is manning the
weapons console on the ship. Gives him + 1 to all rolls involving weapons.

Mech suit ability lets the gunner use the mach suit that is in the ships hanger. No other
class can use the mech suit.

Medic

I'm a doctor, not a dragonslayer. -Leonard H. McCoy

When someone needs a helping hand, or a leg reattached, the medic is there. They will try
their hardest to keep you alive. As long as it's not their golf day that is.

Medics have stabilize, and the organic research ability's.

Stabilize lets the medic stop mortally wounded crewmen from dieing, without a skill check.

Organic research lets the medic research thing's of a organic nature without
a skill  or attribute check. Note, research only tells you what you can do with a object, it will
not do it.

Pilot

The earth is like a spaceship that didn't come with an operating manual. -R. Buckminster Fuller

Without a pilot, a space ship would just be a hunk of metal, aimlessly drifting through space.
A good pilot will turn that hunk of metal into the fastest thing this side of the milky way.

Pilot's have evasive maneuvers, and go to warp ability's

Evasive maneuvers is automatically activated when the pilot is manning the
navigation console. It gives +1 to all dodge rolls for the ship.

Go to warp lets the pilot take the ship into warp without a skill or attribute check.

science officer

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure
about the universe -Albert Einstein

These proud men, and woman are the brains of a star ship. Able to give your an answer, that
you wont be able to understand, to any problem. The science officer will be invaluable on your
journey into the unknown.

Science officers have the inorganic research, and scanning ability's.

Inorganic research let's the science officer research thing's of a inorganic nature without
a skill or attribute check. Note, research only tells you what you can do with a object, it will
not do it.

Scanning lets the Science officers use the ships sensors without a skill  or attribute check.

Attributes and skills.

The last thing your need to do to make a character is give him, or her attributes
and skill points. You get 5 attribute points, and 5 skill points. For every 2 points in a skill or attribute
you get a 1+ to checks that use that skill or attribute. If a skill or attribute has zero points in it, all
checks that use it will have a -1 penalty.

Attributes

Strength: Effects melee, how much you can carry, as well as the use of
heavy weapons, and armor.

dexterity: Determines the success of dodging, and acrobatic movement.

Endurance: It used when you take damage. High endurance will reduce the damage that
you receive. It also increases the time you can stay alive when you mortal wounded.

Intelligences: It is used for actions that use your mind instead of your body.

Charisma: Used to make people see things your way. Useful for negotiations.

Skills

Mechanics: You ability to work with things mechanical.

Weapon use: How well you can use weapons. Used for melee, and ship weapons, as well
as hand held range weapons.

Science: Your ability to make new technology, and how good you are at using
complex technology.

Medical: Your skill as a doctor, and your ability to manipulate organic matter.

Piloting: How well you handle vehicles. Such as space ships, or mech suits.

How to get a new crew members when one dies.

If a crew member dies, another one will not just appear on the ship. The ship will need to go
too the nearest human planet to pick him, or her up. He, or she will then be able to pick which
ever available class he wants.

Any thing else I need to know?

Nope, that's it. I hope you enjoy your adventurers in space.

I'll take medic.

Name :Dr Leon S Malard.
Class : Medic.
Age : 23
Description : 5 Ft 9 with a badly freckled face and messy ginger hair. He has bright green eyes, a big pointy nose and short stubby ears.
He is never seen without a white shirt that is badly blood stained and a belt containing everything from a scalpel to a small electric buzz saw.

Background :
Leon was a very strange child, growing up he was fascinated with the bodies of any animals he could find and spent most of his time cutting them up and then stitching them back together, albeit not always on the same body he had removed the limbs from.
This set him apart from other children and so he never really had any friends which only worsened as he grew up until pets began to vanish one by one from the surrounding streets and then to show up again in gruesome fashions.
His favorite "experiment" had come when he removed the wings from a hawk, the main body of a cat and the limbs from a dog and stitched them back together to see if it could fly.
Shortly after this he was caught trying to steal the pet from another house further away and turned over to the police but being only 13 at the time and this being a fairly minor crime compared to what was happening around the world he was sent to a young offenders institute until he was 18.
This also led to an isolated outbreak of the common gingers have no soul misconception....
This did little change his general attitude but it did give him 5 years to study anatomy and medical theory books and so when he was released on his 18th birthday he sought a job working in a hospital.
Initially he was set to be refused but then upon taking a series of practical tests it was discovered that he was extremely skilled at bolting limbs back onto people or repairing any other damage to the bodies that he was given to work on and so he was hired.
He worked in this role for 9 years and over his career quickly began to be known as a miracle worker in cases involving the removal of limbs as well as bolting them back on, at the same time his less acceptable habits continued but by this stage and working in a hospital it had become a simple matter to hide them from those around him.
9 years after he began an over zealous hospital security guard was closing in on him and so he volunteered himself for the role of medical officer on board the Imperial Unicorn and was quickly accepted after his impressive medical record was examined and so he packed his few belongings, gathered up his array of gruesome and blood soaked medical tools and set out on his new life already imagining what he could do with the bodies of the new species he hoped to encounter....

Skeletal CS

Name: Johann von Moltke
Class:Captain
Appearance: Very sharply dressed, always. A visored battle-ship grey field cap is perched atop his head. Tall, black leather riding boots hit him about 3/4ths the way up his shin, long after horses were abandoned. A row of brass buttons runs down about belt height on his grey coat. The belt itself, matches the riding boots.  The coat itself has a rather high collar, coming almost to his chin. A gold number "7" sits on both sides of the collar's opening, a memento of some unit he served in, long, long ago. Medals of varying importance adorn his chest, chest, as does a wide red silk sash. His trousers are a similar color of grey. One would have to take a microscope to his uniform to find a wrinkle, let alone a more obvious sign of deterioration. His face matches the exactness of his getup, very harsh and angular, with little natural curve anywhere. He is somewhat middle aged, with dirty blond hair that is almost never seen. He is moderately tall, not so much as to stick out in a room but still tall enough to intimidate by towering over. At his side, his service weapon in a well-worn belt holster. He is a soldier, ready for action at any time.

Bio: As much of a martinet he is, his parents were far worse to him. He was drilled like a soldier before he could even write his own name. Military discipline and thought come naturally to him. He joined the Bundeswehr in the Weltraummarine, captaining a few military satellites and conventional naval ships with great success. For this, he was chosen to be the captain of the expedition for his exceptional heroism. He holds the record on account of a joint German and American battle of being the only non-U.S citizen to ever receive the Medal of Honor. In Germany, he's a war hero, and they would proffer no other mind than his to command this expedition.

Background question- is there one world government at this point or are there still separate nations?  If the latter, can I assume the USA is still around?

Name: Simon Tallage
Gender: Male
Appearance: A dark haired man, aged 34.  Short, tends to squint his green eyes when studying or thinking about something.  Tanned-looking complexion.  Uniform is always neat.
Bio:  The Tallage family has had a proud naval tradition that dated back to when the ships were made of wood and used sails.  Simon Tallage was expected to be no less of a naval man, and enlisted in the US Naval officer program.  His high test scored easily earned him admission, though the influence of his parents- both US Naval officers- would have seen him entrance anyway.  After aptitude testing, Simon was ushered into the science division.

This suited him just fine, because he is horrified by the prospect of violence.

Through skillful lying, bluster, and avoiding the topic, he fooled most everyone in the academy into believing that he was capable as anyone else in the realm of combat.  He bribed his way through the basic gunnery tests, and somehow avoided all the combat simulations.  He was no coward- he wouldn't hesitate to push a friend out of the path of a speeding truck- but he was a pacifist.  The thought of using violence to solve problems sickened him.  If it was not for the expectation of his parents, he would have happily worked as a scientist back home.  Fortune favored him, and he quickly made a name for himself in the science core- leading to his selection for this mission.

Smart and loyal, but no ability in combat- would he be an asset to the team or a liability?
