Useful things to know
« on: December 18, 2012, 06:29:10 am »

Source it, and give us something that we probably don't already know. Edit: which is not easily disputed. 2nd edit: I will occassionally call out a theme. It doesn't need to be followed strictly, but things should be somehow related. Inventiveness is encouraged. Returm to anarchy will also be announceded.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Reading a book one hour a day  equates to over 15 days of extra study a year.  Reading with focus on one subject an hour a day results in you having all the academic knowledge *for a degree* (presuming you retain it and follow acceptable cirriculum) in 2.6 - 3.1 years.

I calculated the time to earn a degree for my school, based on one hour a day work.

A generic liberel arts degree (the average) would take 2.6 years, at 960 hours.
A degree in some higher-order psychology program would take 3.1 years, at 1166 hours.
An Associates in accounting could take only 1.4 years at ~530 hour.

. . .
 . . .
  . . .
. . .
How long do you spend online or playing video games or hanging out idely every day?

Like I say above, this is presuming you retain the knowledge, learn the appropriate lexicon and concepts, and stick to a testable cirriculum.  More often you read non-fiction that assumes you know the lexicon/concepts.  While this is also a way to learn, I did not estimate the time it takes to do this, which may be from negligable to extensive.

It actually is a government official type of thing, it's to signal that you expect to be receiving incredibly important mail and thus junk mail could end up with said important mail stuck within it and subsequently thrown out.

We have that here in Belgium too, but you have to apply for it.

A graph is a forest if it contains no circles, and a tree is a conjoined forest. Also, trees have at least two leaves.

Screw graph theory. (I hope I translated it right; it's pretty funny in german)

I think technically you're supposed to apply for it here too but the postal workers never check who actually did.

While sloths move extremely slowly, you should be very careful about trying to move one out of the road. Most people wouldn't expect the words "sloth" and "eviscerated" to show up in the same sentence, but it can actually happen rather easily if you aren't careful.

The notation is a bit awkward, but I think that's substantially correct.  One might argue that a graph with just one node (the root) or two nodes (a root and a leaf) are degenerate trees, but that's not as fun I guess.

Here's one:

Nuclear power plants produce less ambient radiation than coal power plants.

Any integer whose integers are all ones, up to 111111111, has a square that, when read as seperate numbers, counts up to the number of digits in the number, then back down to 1. (Wow that's hard to explain).
Examples: 1^2=2 11^2=121 11111^2=123454321
