It has a lot to do with the fact that proper horror shies away from combat or makes combat a very deadly proposition that makes most people like to stay away from it.

You cannot combine Cthulluverse from what I am guessing they want from Anime

Since that essentially makes Clocktower 3... AKA "What if Sailormoon fought ghosts instead of the Megaverse?"

Ahem.

It isn't what I mean. You cannot combine something that is by all means supposed to be thematically Cthulhu flavored and keep it action oriented.

Many settings included Lovecraftian gods either dirrectly (Such as Conan) or indirrectly (Shuma Goriath in Marvel), yet they rarely keep the basic principles because they are so fundemental and so changing.

You cannot be ontop of anything in Cthulhu. It is about being small, about being helpless, about needing to do everything you possibly can do and more just to make sure everything doesn't go bad. The only reason Earth isn't destroyed is mostly because no one cares and the only ones who do care are beings who are using humans or enjoying their misery.

Also to quote the site.

Quote
Through the unorthodox blending of arcane principles with modern science, Humanity has created an inexhaustible power source that has revolutionized the world.

Ohhh? So humanity is using magic wholesale now? Magic that is likely given to us by Yog-Sothoth the god of magic itself and also one of the major old ones who is the master of all space and time huh?

Magic is just that safe and easy huh. I know that safe magic existed in the cthulhu universe but those always blended with spiritualism and hintest at the possibility of there being something more.

---

ADMITTINGLY I sort of like the idea of a setting in the last days of the human race. (Since the Future Great Race of Yith didn't come into play until humanity were dead)

Though they are sooo doomed. Facing the Dreaming God in a fully realised form and not a half asleep state.

Also I admit the setting would be more awsome in videogame format. There is just soo much Cthulhu forces can do that would make the game as much about combat as it is about just trying to mess over your opponent. Just having a large force ready but Hounds of Tartaros eat all of your crew (since there is no real way to stop them) would be pretty devistating.

---

Also I am interested, but I'd like to know the times.

That time's fine by me too, with the exception of Thursday. Friday/Saturday 9-10 pm GMT fits well though.

Depends on what parts of the Cthuluverse you want to keep, really.
>> There is scary, 'hopeless' anime in crapsack world type settings, ala. Claymore, Berserk.

>> There is Demonbane; that takes alot of the core concepts well, and throws mecha in there and the ultimate plot of which involves destroying the Shining Trapezohedron. The fact that the Necronomicon is a walking, talking girl is neither here nor there. :D

>> There's also the ridiculous aspect. I blogged about Nyaruko here, which directly takes the piss out of the CoC system:

But yeah, I guess there isn't anything DIRECTLY like CoC in the animeverse; but I'm just saying it could be done with the right GM and the right Motivation, just make your own setting that combines the above.

EDIT: Anyway, I'll be watching for now, but I wish you luck with running your game.

aye, i do like the insanity side of things like to learn spells there is a big disadvantage but they are shit powerful. And really i will be putting alot of work into my Game and change round some mechanics and add some new things which players want or feel would make the game more enjoyable but keeping the same theme that players are generally fucked and more of onion layer investigation which can lead onto stuff but still some fighting in there, i dont know a good mix of everything to make it very mythos.

I'd love to play. I ran a couple game myself, and it was a really great experience (Especially the second one, when an impromptu thunderstarm made for dramatic mood.).

I was actually talking about what part of anime they want to keep.

Clocktower 3 is an example of what happens in this scenario.

I'd argue your definition of "what makes Cthulhu" is subjective at best. I may not like Cthulhutech, but I'm not taking the position it "can't be done." It's been done, regardless of how much action there is or how much agency people have in that ruleset/setting. I mean, in Dark Corners of Earth you:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

By your definition, that cannot be in any way shape or form Cthulhu, despite the fact the brand label is slapped right there on the cover.

Actually that is a great example of both our sides Nenjin.

Since Dark Corners of the earth worked best when you weren't just shooting everything dead and started to fall appart when you actually started to become a combat dynamo (As with most horror games... as with Clocktower 3)

Also it isn't like Lovecraft's books didn't feature people doing epic fights against monsters. Cthulhu's only appearance ended with him losing a fight. A few creatures and people were shot down and met their end.

What I mean, but cannot explain well enough apperantly, is the issue is that there is always a push in action animes to getting ontop of your enemy (or terrible shock death animes...). You do not summon the power of friendship to give you extra strength to kill Cthulhu, you do not learn a new techique or use a special attack. You do not get a bunch of action heros to play with the Cthulhu mythos because they are ancient horrors who have been around since before humanity, vastly more intelligent and complex then we could ever hope to be, backed with the magical might of the Outer gods. As well their complete unearthlyness is inherantly maddening.

Can it be done? Yes if you were a GENIUS and deconstructed the action tropes. Heck maybe one of the heros is a Old One in disguise.

As for that setting what hurts it in terms of the theme depends on how it is handled. They DO strongly hint that they are getting their magic from the mythos (afterall, that is where most magic comes from) but they have yet to extrapolate if this came at a cost.

The difference is if it is Cthulhu inspired and takes the creatures or if it is using the same themes.

Is it a "Cthulhu flavored space anime mech game" or is it a "Cthulhu in Space". South Park included Cthulhu in one of their episodes and Scribblenauts includes Cthulhu in the game. Yet you have to seperate simply using some of the themes and mythos and making something genuinly Lovecraftian to the extent that it feels like if could have actually happened in the Cthulhu mythos with a few additions.
