Eighth-Dwarf - a 3D df clone
« on: December 16, 2012, 11:02:03 pm »

I have started development on an open-source 3D graphical clone of DF called Eighth-Dwarf.

Any contributors are welcome to join the project.

You can check out the project at eighth-dwarf.googlecode.com.

So, you went to extra effort just to berate someone else's project because...?

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Good luck and ignore the knee-jerk reactionaries. I'm curious; what's the story behind the name "Eighth"?

Welcome and Good luck, James!

What will make your game different from Gnomoria?
Is your goal to emulate DF exactly or to branch off from it?
How many people are helping you right now?
When do you expect to have a playable alpha?
What do you see as your biggest challenge?

Get a good UI

Well, if you start with seven dwarves, which one actually runs the fortress?

Posting to watch.

From reading the description in your link, I assume you're going for a much more tightly focused game than actual DF, or do you hope to eventually have a full fledged clone?

I'm not trying to berate. Hell, I have a strong hope that this will get done, since it would be awesome to play. However, the first thing I get out of a project like this is that it will take quite a while before it is in fact done, and that is what I fear.

Actually, I thought the 3d part would take forever to figure out how to do, but in actuality it took only 2 weeks.  As for taking a long time to make it playable, I deliberated with myself (no I didn't) about how to release the project.  I had wanted to wait and get something playable to sell, but being grounded somewhat in reality, I decided to open-source it and hope for donations.  Also, putting it out there open-source would encourage others to jump on the band wagon and speed up development.  Not to mention that I really suck at 3d graphic artistry.

I wish to have a full clone.  Think of it as the clone wars all over.  :)

Looks intresting, i'll be keeping an eye on this for sure.
But expect to put tonnes and tonnes of time into it if you wish to have a full clone.

How are you going to do world maps?

1.  Actual 3d 3rd person perspective where you can spin the world to view it from any angle.
2.  Emulate it fully.
3.  I have no one helping me right now, but would welcome the help.
4.  Playable alpha maybe in the spring.
5.  Biggest challenge is 3d models.  I am not a graphic artist.
