Ok then, looks like we'll get this started.

I've begun a list of potential characters. if you like one, say it. If you want to change something about it, say it. If you've got a complete other idea, say it.
The list lacks classic magic users for now (Wizards, Sorcerers, Warlocks), but they may follow.

1) Half elf barbarian leader : the Alpha wolf has pointy ears. Pretty buffed for a half elf, he is a very good warrior, and a charismatic one. He is used to lead his mates in battle, and will take hits for them. He is nearly as useful outside the battles as during those, understanding many cultures and languages.

2) [TAKEN] Dwarven bear-centered barbarian/druid : the multi-size bear. Much closer to the nature than the previous one and mechanically more tanky. She is an good warrior too, especially when she trasform into a 300kg bear, able to withstand punishment and giving some too. Member of a cartographer's guild and appreciated for her resourcefulness, she is s able to live in society as in the wilderness.

3) Warpriest of Kord (God of Strength, Battles, and Storms) : the heavy armored Thor-like. Invoking thunderwaves on his enemies and guidance of his God on his allies, this character is a great ally to have in battle. DEspite his lack of theorical knowledge, he is often one of the wisest soldier you've seen, but this doesn't prevent his boldness from taking over.

4) Charlatan bard : the best con artist. He is a cheating specialist, and knows his ways, magic or mundane. He uses every mean to bluff his way in and out anywhere, gathering intelligence from everything and everyone. Also useful in combat, he is much better from a distance, using buffs and debuffs to change the tide for whichever side he chooses. Those who know him will say he's a coward, but those who know him best won't : that's something you regret.

5) Halfling head-huntress : the half-sized valkyrie. Tracking her preys, and taking them down even when they're 4 times her size is her specialty. Her two scimitars have gutted many animals, and now, it's time for some goblins. She always seems a bit too much joyous in battle, but her hunting stories always open the doors of every tavern.

6) Sage Fighter : Jack of all fights. This fighter is one of many battles. Previously a mercenary, he has learned many things and explored the world. Now a dabbler in magic, an excellent fighter with many techniques, he is competent in more skills than most.

7) Cleric of Sune : the pillar of joy (and fire). Survivalist seeking her inner joy, wandering the wild repairing autels of the gods, spreading love among the animals and villagers she meets during her journey. Trying to show the beauty in everything and spreading the light where are the shadows, she may appear to some as a pyromaniac. That may not be totally false.

8) sharpshooter assassin : the cliché orphan. Specialised in tracking preys in cities, this rogue is one of best bowmen alive. Urchin raised by a guild of mercenary thieves and assasssins before it was taken down by Bhaal's cultists (God of murder), he was educated with a great sense of values, and will not hesitate to kill when he is paid to.

IN.

And I think I'll probably go for customizing. What I have in mind is bard-y though, just so others know. EDIT: Actually, Fuck it, I'll just tell you and you can change it up since you volunteered.
I'm gonna fucking play Kamina.
So yeah, go for bard with as much inspirational-type stuff as possible (Preferably anything he could use as badass boasts/speeches instead of namby-pamby instrument stuff) and give him a big ass Nodachi. Also a badass cape.

Also since it might come up, what level should we expect to be at start?

Oh, I didn't write that :
You start at lvl3, any class or multi-class you want.
Feats are OK, variant humans are OK. Drows are not, and I'd prefer to avoid Tieflings, dragonborns, and half-orcs (at least uncivilised ones).

BFEL : I'll be able to get my hands on my book in 2 hours, to try and make something that would fit a Kamina-oriented Bard. Odly enough, I don't feel Kamina as a Pure bard, but with a part warrior-y class. On the other hand, there is the Valor specialization, for bards. I don't remember it exactly, so I'll give you more details later ;)

You can have the dwarf bear as a male, yeap :)

Also, BFEL,  from what I'm reading about the Valor Bard, it could fit a Kamina Character.

I wish I had time to play :(

My standard rules for "shrimp swarms" is that everyone within a square of the attacker can roll vs a 10 to add +1 to attack and damage to a single mook who takes the swing.

That's a good idea!

Of course it is OK to make your own :)
I'll have to validate it, of course, and I will ask you to use the 27-point-buy method to generate the attributes.

And about making a new thread, I'm planning to open it soonTM

Here it is ! :D

So, actually discussing the Rules and such here. How best do people recommend gravitating your players away from grid based combat and to abstracted combat. They're all new or newish players, and we're playing pathfinder right now. I'm having the hardest time getting them to RP properly, so I at least want to do smaller battles mind-wise. I was thinking of using minis on a blank table just as a "you're around abouts here".
Any ideas/suggestions? How does the combat play out in 5th grid wise (haven't transitioned just yet, have the book though)?

To improve the quality of roleplay YOU must raise the quality of roleplay. Show them how it is done and make sure there is one player who will roleplay to get everyone else in the mood.

Are they all new?

I myself am too nervous to do good roleplay in person... Text I am fine.

5e is meant to be played "Theatre of the Mind", so without even minis.
I played with a group with some new players, soem used to 4e and its grid, and soem used to other games with and without grid. I have a white-board, I sued to draw general things (there is a tree here for the rogue to hide behind, and a fire here that goblin lit), with players using minis (well, not real minis as nobody bought any, but other games pieces). It was really faster than in 4e, but it also comes from the much faster combat in 5e (as logn as you don't have a full wizard party).

Can't do it over text. I absolutely have to be face to face to have a good RP session.
