Tick boxes:
[] Uses Japanese words when otherwise speaking English.
[X] Has anime avatar.
[] Knows every touhou character by their hats.
[] Uses Pomf as their ringtone.
[] Openly mocks SAO as the worst thing ever, yet still watches with interest.
[] Goes to multiple cosplay conventions a year.
Technically an OC avatar based on an anime.  Sadly the artist and his significant other has poofed...
Also, I like SAO and don't mock it... does that still count as a checkbox?  Or am I safe?

Yes, English will steal your entire language if you aren't watchful.

English is the lingual equivalent of a mugger, it knocks other languages over the head, drags them down a dark alley, and rifles through their pockets for grammar.

The weird thing about that is that the Japanese are even worse about appropriating words than we are, as long as those words are English.

Most of the words we borrow from Japanese we use in a Japanese context, most of the words they borrow from English are for all kinds of weird things.

If they're concepts brought in from another country there's not much point in making up your own word for it.  I mean I guess the French try to but it doesn't usually work.

It's better than what the Germans do. They smash existing words together until they get something that describes the new thing well enough. This has the horrific side effect of creating many 30-character long words.

And they have the Überwachungskameras to make sure you use them correctly. At least, according to what my parents saw on a trip there.

Although that does have the interesting side effect of producing some cool compounds. Of course I'm able to say that from the distance of not having to use them.

The thing about Japanese appropriation is that a lot of the words don't seem particularly tied to foreign concepts. For every "konpyuutaa" there's a "gibbu uppu" or a "faito." There's a lot of English borrowings that seem done mostly out of trendiness, and the other strange thing is a lot of them would be completely undecipherable to an English speaker. For example, "nyuuhaafu" means transsexual.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.
