Try using greaves; greaves are plate armor, as opposed to the leggings' mail.

I suggest armoring every part of his body except his legs in steel, then launching giant copper axeblades at him until the legs are severed.

The cuts might not be clean enough. Too much blood might be lost. You'll want to go at the legs one at a time, with something very, very sharp. It's a shame CMD's can't amputate stuff yet.
