The Slow Crawl of Time (And more!)
« on: November 23, 2007, 03:07:00 pm »

So I've played for hours and am only a short way into my first summer. All over I see people complete a year within a day or two. These people are either sitting at home for long hours of playtime or there's a way to mod the game to make it go faster. I assume this has something to do with changing the FPS settings, my question is - how do I do it?

I have a second question as well. I have a Woodcutter who won't cut. I've selected trees and he can get to them (He's even hauled some wood over to the new stockpile I made there). He has Woodcutting enabled and has nothing better to do. I've even disabled all other skills. Yet he stands there. The only thing I can assume is that I forfeited my battleaxe and just forgot I did so. So my question is - how can I find the axe? He's not holding it, it's not in the stockpiles, what can I do? And if there is some other reason he might not be doing it, what is it?

Each season usually takes me anywhere from an hour to three depending on how much micromanagement I do.

Some of us just have the tendency to lose track of time and play till 3 in the monring. "come on, just need to find that magma vent and I'll go to bed..."   :D

About the battleaxe: try building a weapon trap or look for it in the Move Goods to Depot screen if there's a caravan coming by. If you can't find it, I'll bet you forgot to bring one or it was lost somehow.

If it's too slow, turn weather and temp off if you haven't.

Don't have a Depot up yet, but that weapons trap idea seems good.
I should go ahead and build a depot though.

Stocks?

Slow doesn't mean lag. I haven't noticed any lag yet, at all. I guess my computer is good enough to run an ASCII game.

This is no ordinary ASCII game. This game can make top end machines beg for mercy.

Temperature and weather make the game run slow, quite literally, as they reduce the FPS. The FPS, in this case (that can be displayed) is not actually a true "fps", but I believe instead tells you how many "turns" per second the game is playing at. Graphical FPS doesn't seem to matter anymore and is a seperate entity now.

Consider this more of a simulator than a game when it comes to processing power.

Seeing as the default for maximum fps in the options is set to 100, it sounds like your computer needs more jiggawatts.

Stocks can be accessed from (z) then selecting the stocks option. Afterwards scroll down to the weapons category and check if your axe shows there.

How can I display this FPS?

I'll be trying the stocks thing once I get a dedicated Bookkeeper. Right now I've only got my leader with Novice Record Keeping and I need him more as a Miner.

In the /data/init folder there is an init.txt

One of the lines toggles the FPS display on and off. Change it to [FPS:YES]
to get the display in the upper left corner.

How fast is your computer? You should limit yourself by choosing 3x3 tiles on the embark screen and avoiding a lot of running water, magma etc if your computer can't handle it. Turning off weather and maybe temperature is good too, and limiting the maximum number of dwarves in the fortress. (init file)

Incidentally, one of these "turns" of yours is called a frame.

If a dwarf assigned to woodcutting is not holding an axe, then most likely another dwarf has the axe, which is by far the most likely reason for it to not be available to him.

Well I turned on the FPS display - it's steady at 6.

That would be why it seemed so slow :/
