why are they "other" kills?

for you can see in the notable kills there are goblins.

Only thing which makes sense is that those 1000 were nameless, which suggests children/workers?
Either that or you added an aggressive animal to you files which do not do any damage or very little, and just had that guy smashing them for a few years.

Those 1117 "Other" kills are historical kills from before he migrated to my fortress.  He's not a vampire, he's just killed a whole hell of a lot of goblins. 

I'm digging through Legends mode right now trying to figure out how he's got such a kill list, but all I can see is that he fought an alligator, then migrated to my fortress.  I'm not that familiar with Legends mode, but I'll keep looking.

I can upload the save somewhere if someone thinks they might be able to dig out more information on this guy.  I'd personally love to see the history of how he managed to slaughter over 1000 goblins.

Most likely a defender of his previous settlement during the siege. It is normal to see 15 defenders fight 2000 attackers and win, as the battle is not what it is in fortress mode, but instead a number of one-on-one duels, during which the dwarf can gain combat skills and if he survives first few he can win the rest easily.

so in legends mode/world generation the defenders are fighting against unintelligent nameless mooks?
great. Knowing this has made my day better.

@OP: get him to train your militia! he surely has enough combat skills to be a champion. Or at least enough luck to get a thousand luckshots in a row.

Judging by the Giant Thrips kills (heh, dodged a grammar landmine here) it's 1117 female goblins. They should have stayed in the kitchen.
