Yes and no. You don't always start off at range, more often you start with enemies very close to you.

Are tech and charm any useful at all? I know tech is used to make barricade but as does this mean carrying materials all the time? Cos I have encumbrance issue already. I recycled all my materials at the safehouse though.

My safehouse is right next to the hardware store for ease of access to vital materials. If you're in the clan you can see the warehouses on the Clan menu and the map as well.

Tried to join the clan, character's name is lee strongfield, still just starting out in the game.

Starting out as well, name's "Galm". I'm currently level 5.

I'd say the best option to start out is to build up agility so you can escape the zombies.

Yeah, I'm all smarts and str for encumberance (carry limit) and such.

My cousin (MegaNight) is pure ranged, he utterly RAPES with his rifle, its insane.
