The story of the three City-States of Egardeg, Oldways
« on: December 14, 2012, 11:54:23 pm »

Welcome to the story of Egardeg(Oldways) or it's proper full name, Egardeg Zustashgostangniroram Anur(Oldways, the Ancient Awe-inspiring Land-World of Wonder) I guess I kinda went overboard naming the place. Anyhow... Back to the reason you're all here. I had been thinking for awhile that it might be kinda fun to write out what happened to next fortress, as I always have so much fun. That and normal dwarf fortress always ends up in me getting bored and having no reason to continue on and eventually decided that my fortress might look better if it was full of magma... Or demons... Or in the latest case, Demons made of magma. The inspiration to write it out has come largely from Splint's "The Story of Limulid, Goldenrocks" I greatly suggest you go check it out.
Anyway, back to the purpose of this thread... I bet the majority of you read the title and thought "What's he mean by City-states?" or "Oh no, not that challenge from the wiki *groan.*" Well let me explain what I mean by citystates. To any groaners I do mean the challenge in a way, however I've adjusted it slightly to it's not just a story of 7 isolated peasants working away at the earth far away from each other. If you'll do me the pleasure of reading the next post with the background story on it you'll understand.

Anyway, assuming you've read or will read it once your finished with this I'll continue. I'll be nicknaming my dwarves as they arrive, using everything from the names of friends to names from thin-air, however you lovely folk can choose to claim dwarves should you wish to, and help decide their fate(and name), and the fate of the others around as well. I might add drawing or images as I go. It all depends on whether I feel it needs one, or if it's requested.

Anyways welcome to this little disfunctional groups tale. Happy Reading.

I hope you'll enjoy reading this little fun tale.

I've decided to remove proffesions from the list, they change so often I don't dare bother with it at the moment. Once everything is stable I will.
I'll post what everyone is when they immigrate in for now, and then tell you they are should you ask.

(Finally after 3 restarts because of game freezing before saving could occur.)(Though I'm kinda sad, My original valley I wanted to start in is just like spots of my embark site. The two sites overlap. But I won't get any people from it as it didn't save.)Back to storyline.

The dwarves that settled Egardeg had set out for adventure together in the year 125. Having always enjoyed each others company in their little meetings in the deep halls of the dwarven capital they thought that it'd be a great idea. A year of travel and bickering changed their minds. Now, in the year 126, having nearly reached the last of their supplies they decided that settling down now was the only way they'd be able to keep their supplies up and stay alive. The only problem was, in what way would they settle, what would be greatest? A great tower rivaling even the tallest of structures before it? A deep underground fortress? A Grand Citadel set out for all to see?
That was the problem. They each had a different idea, two wanting a tower, two wanting a deep fortress, and two wanting that citadel. The seventh? She tried to keep peace, but it didn't happen. They each set off in different directions. Each hoping to prove they were right. Even if it meant eventually...
shenanigans among the other city-states or even the complete slaughter of the naysayers should it come to that. And the expedition leader? Though tensions were high, she went to work trying to glue her shatter friends and their friendships back together. (Sorry that didn't turn out great... I couldn't get my ideas to be all nice and cooperative) (I'll post the first in-game thing tomorrow. It's late. This took awhile to write out)

So Remalle, question, Which plan will Mosus follow? Tower, Citadel, or Underground Fortress?
Or should I decide?

I've only gotten to like part 17 so far of Limulid but I absolutely enjoy it so far, and it made me feel like writing my own. Thanks for the idea Splint. Just... Don't touch any glowy orange liquid you find in this thread... It might be magma fun.

Citadel sounds good.  Great walls of solid gold, you know.  Gem windows.  Make the other dwarves jealous.

Alright I'll give you Olin Usenber then Oldark.
But all Citadels need a good foundation to start with. So while at the beginning it won't be impressive it'll grow in leaps and bounds.
----------------------------------------
"Melbil, Hey Melbil," A dwarf called out. "Melbil, I think it would be a good time to think about settling."  "Why Olin?" She asked. "Because we're nearly out of supplies," he replied. "That would be a good reason to stop," She said. "Hey everyone! Stop. We're going to settle down here." Curious as to what was happening they all started moving back to the wagon. "I've decided that we should settle here. Now to the question is, what to call this new land?" A short and stocky dwarf tentatively raises his hand. "Yes Urvad?" "Egardeg, Egardeg Zustashgostangniroram Anur," he replies. "Excellent, Urvad. Does anyone else have a suggestion? No? Alright, Egardeg it is." Melbil says. "Now the question is, what sort of settlement do we want to have?" Three dwarven hands pop up. "Alright," She says " Mosus, Olin, and Rigoth. First Mosus, what do you think we should do?" "I believe a Citadel built on the banks of that brook, built into the mountain, would make an excellent settlement." He said. "Alright, And you Rigoth?" "I believe we should build a tower on top those flat highlands, so all can see the glory of the dwarves." she said. "Oh course you'd want a tower," Olin sneered. "You always want to build towers, everywhere. So undwarven." "It is not," She argued. "STOP ARGUING!" Melbil shouted. "Olin! Your idea?" "A great underground fortress, protected from the outerworld." "Alright," Melbil replied. "All in favor of the Citadel say 'I.'" "I" "I" The second 'I' came from Urvad. "All in favor of the underground fortress?" "I" "I" This time the second 'i' was from Ushat. "And all in favor of the tower" "I" "I" This time the 'I' came from Zan. This was just what Melbil feared, a tie. "So what's it going to be Melbil?" Olin sneered. "It's a tie. I don't care anyway. I'm going to have my underground fortress anyway" With that he marched off toward one of the 2 highlands, with Ushat in tow. "If he's going to leave so am I," Rigoth said marching off toward the second, smaller highland, with Zan. "In that case I guess we'll just go make our citadel." Mosus replied, walking off toward the brook with Urvad. "People, people wait," She called as they all walked away. Sighing she went to work securing the wagon, knowing in time they'd all need her help with their now divided city states.

Sorry for the bump but... Update.
---------------------------------
Rigoth and Zan set forth toward the northern highland. Mosus and Urvad toward a small clearing near the brook. It was surrounded by highland on three sides. The fun thing however, is that Olin and Ushat set forth towards the highland the Mosus and Urvad settled near, invoking chances for fun later.
---------------------------------
7th Slate, 126
Excerpt from the diary of Melbil Zonneth;
Something special has occurred that must be noted. On this day though all city-states were aware of the need to gather wood, instead all dwarves, including myself set fishing, even after designating the proper locations for each to begin their wood-cutting. Reports have shown that, as expected only the brook of Urvad and Mosus have any fish of which to harvest.

---------------------------------
Mosus and Urvad:

"Mosus, um Mosus, Do you see what I see over there," Urvad called to his new partner, pointing out towards the forest a little ways upriver of the brook. "If you mean the herd of the Giant flying squirrels, I see them quite clearly," Mosus called back. "Well you realize this is going to be a problem then right?" Urvad replied. Both of them knew quite well from legends of a fortress far off that Giant flying squirrels can be quite devastating near the being of an outpost, especially one as divided as theirs.

Nice update. And I think if you're practically going to be soloing a thread with a few readers, it's fine if you bump it.
