"this" being Urist_McDrowner's posts, yeah.

Don't do that.
Hm yeah, the verb wouldn't match up, sorry.  It really should've been "posting" instead of "posts".

He tried to get past the office staff. They tried to stop him, but they were shot. Imagine if one of them had a gun? Imagine if, after rigorous background and mental health checks, every member of the staff that passed was required to have a gun?
So we should spend all kinds of money on safety training and the firearms themselves, arming people who have no real need to be armed, in a school full of children, on the rare occurrence that there might be a school shooting there?

It just isn't economically feasible because school shootings are not nearly common enough to justify it. Also, a lot of people are going to find the idea of arming elementary school teachers unpalatable.

No using. That's not what freedom is for.

Why not just do what most highschools do... pay one or two trained professionals to hang out around/in the school to deal with fights, crimes, ect.  The school I went to was 900 kids with 3 cops hanging around the school ground at all times, no bad shit ever happened because you wouldn't get sent to the principle if it was illegal (read serious assault/fights/ect) you'd be sent to talk to the cops.

You want guns in schools? Seriously? Fire arms to be kept within grabbing range of emotionally immature kids who don't yet understand the seriousness of shooting each other.

Yeah, that argument is basically like saying "to sterilize our waters, add more bacteriophages"!

Feeling too hot? Put on this great big woolen sweater to keep the sun off you!
Keeping one source of the problem out won't help when you are recreating the problem internally.

except covering yourself with the appropriate type of cloth does keep the heat and sun out...

Ok this is getting ridiculous seriously, can we either have some non-flame war discussion/any actual news artical links/discussions. Or like... idk lock the thread?  It's just spiraling into more and more of the same abusive stuff to each other and the world in general.

I'd quote Kurt Vonnegut, but I doubt it'd help.

Yeah that was the joke.  But I guess it's only ok to criticize other people if you do it vaguely and indiscriminately rather than in a targetted manner.

You seem to be under the impression that any sort of disagreement is 'spiraling into more and more of the same abusive stuff to each other and the world in general'
Normal, healthy debate isn't the same as just abusing each other.

Also, yes, the correct type of clothing will protect you from the sun, just like the correct legislation will help prevent shootings. The point is being careful and understanding the implications of your selections.

I agree that it's a dumb idea to have people required to carry guns, but I don't think having an armed police officer or 2 in every school would really be all that bad.  As far as the guns being in "grabbing range", I'd love to see some teenager make a grab for a cop's gun.

We had an officer on campus at our school.  It's a good idea I think.  He even went around to our civics classes and had Q&As with students.

But they wouldn't be cops. I  agree it sounds like a sensible idea, but the practicals will fail. Notably, the human element. I personally know teachers I wouldn't feel safe being in the same room as if they had a gun. People go, mad. Especially poorly paid teachers. Do you REALLY want a school to be armed to the teeth?

And what pisses me off the most is the assumption that having a gn makes you competent. Accuracy, ESPECIALLY OF CIVILIANS is terrible. Remember the police shooting at the empire state building? That accuracy is fairly common. and they're trained professionals. Do you honestly think the government can afford to train teachers? There's ALOT of teachers. And if it actually happens, more people are going to eventually end up being shot by the TEACHERS then the mass gunman.
