We should make campaign ads along the lines of "Guns make your dick smaller"

IIRC the NRA has a tendency to perform rallies after school shootings that go media critical. So inb4 that happens.

Knife attack = Injuries.

Gun attack = Deaths.

This point has already been made in this thread TBH.

mental care = no attack. you missed the important point.

Agreed, but finding those who need help who aren't self-reporting is difficult at best. Short of requiring every US citizen to submit for mental health screenings annually, which is terrifying in its own dystopian way.

Who says they need to self report? Certainly there's family, coworkers, friends, etc?

Sure there's some "happiness is mandatory" dystopian concerns you could bring up, but I think "not being murderously violent is mandatory" is somewhat less troubling.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

That assumes that you have a system that can accurately identify people who need mental care before they go off the deep end. In a society with around 300 million people with a government that already has trouble getting funding for necessary programs. It's simply not practical, while stricter gun ownership laws and tighter restrictions on what sort of weapons a citizen can own are.

You do realize LIFE is not a round of Dwarf Fortress where everyone has a Rage and Hapines stats and you can more or less predict who's going to go tantruming/berserking in a few minutes right?

If you can even predict whether any particular dwarf will be alive in a few minutes, your doing it wrong.

sure about that? because plenty of shooting ended with new flash of 'entirely avoidable' and 'telling signs ignored'

So the Connecticut Police have only confirmed 26 dead and one injured (there was a TV press conference a few minutes ago). Where are the higher numbers coming from?

Yeah, note that newspapers/websites etc. try to sensationalize this sort of thing, because they know it will sell them more copies.

It appears he was talking about the world being better without him, and hoping the mayan apoc. was real etc. on his facebook page... but it's been blocked now.

Mental health care fail again; but then, I'm of the opinion that mental illness is a prerequisite for committing such an act.

(On a tangent, I've been following the 'Psycho Pass' anime recently, it's about a future where everyone is under continual automated psychiatric evaluation; where the police are dispatched to take people into custody for treatment when their pass gets too 'cloudy' regardless of what their actions have been; and if their criminal probability gets too high, they may be preemptively executed.)

Well it's hardly that dramatic, but leans in that direction, yes. Not too much of course, since a million is but a statistic.

By comparison, Japan has 0.07 per 100,000.
Great Britain has 0.22 per 100,000.
You know who else has a relatively low rate? Israel. (1.86)
I'd just like to put in my possibly incompetent two-cents by saying that Japan has 127,817,277 people, Britain has 62,641,000 people, Israel has 7,765,700 people, and the US blows these numbers away at 311,591,917 people (google "population of *nation*" for these numbers). These lower numbers of people will generally mean less people gathered in places like large cities, which would lower violence in general. The violence rate will be lower if you have less people, to put it in a short way. There's an impossibly large number of variables from every aspect of society to deal with when thinking about why violence like this happens.
