Can I get Roc's when none are alive in legends?
« on: December 14, 2012, 03:35:22 am »

Hi,
I really want to try and catch a Roc.
I generated a new world, and I have checked the legends. Two rocs have existed, but they are both dead.
So my question is, can I still run into Rocs in my fortress, or MUST I have a live one in history?

Unless they managed to breed before dying, no, rocswon't show up in that fortress.

If they manage to live a few years and you like the world in question, export the data from Legends Mode, copy the world-gen data for that world and paste it into the world_gen file in the data/init folder. Then all you have to do is use Advanced World Gen to create that world, wait until it starts generating history, and hit enter sometime before the year that the first one dies in to stop generating history (you could also change the history parameters, but this sometimes alters historical events so they might just wind up getting killed earlier by somebody else). Hit 'u' to use the world as is and, barring you changing the raws by adding things, you should have the exact same world, but with live rocs.

Note that the earliest year that you can get with this method is Year Five since there's always about a three year run off between when you hit enter and when it actually stops. If one of them was killed before then, you'll have to change the parameters and hope that history refuses to change.

Btw when you stop the world gen at a certain time, it always waits 3 years and then stops for me.. (is this just me?)

There is a certain lag, but I think for me it's between 2 and 5 years. Might depend on how busy the computer is.

If you want to stop at a certain year you can just put an end year in advanced world gen. This does not distort history. If you want world gen to stop before a certain event, you set the end year to the year that event happened.

But then I will have less than 100 years of history. Wont that make everything kind of "boring"?
Not many epic creatures will be around?

exact opposite. less history means less time to kill all the epic creatures. And also no civs will likely die out.

People like genning long worlds for whatever reason, probably because cities are developed hugely and such...

It really depends on what you want from a world. I find longer history better for adventure mode and shorter better for fort mode.
With shorter history you can expect more megabeasts and such and less vampires and necromancers. A possible downside is that some materials might be unavailable through trade, if civs have not spread far enough.
For a fort world I often generate only 30 years of history, with only 5 civs (you can only interact with 5 in fort mode) and without Night Trolls (these don't do anything in fort mode).
For an adventure world more is better because you get more stuff to kill and to explore.

this. Way more random ogres and stuff :P

I usually embark early so not online do i get to create my own history, there's less lag as less historical data and more amusing beasts to kill.

Dear Urist McStockpileDrone
I just found a barrel which contained a wheelbarrow. Inside the wheelbarrow was another barrel. I don't even understand how that is possible.

You can also just use the Advanced World Generation and set the megabeast cap to something a bit higher, and give them a few more caves to hide, as well as set the world to stop when a certain percentage of beasts are dead.

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Advanced_world_generation#Max_Megabeasts_Caves

Doing this almost guarantees you will have rocs, dragons, hydra, and all those Fun beasts available to be killed/captured/trained (training and breeding require a bit of RAW editing, but nothing difficult)
